Hmmm... I definitely had to check the stats on this one, I hadn't heard of him.

http://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/stats/p...php?pid=115481

LW'er, 6 foot 3, turns 21 in February so is becoming a bit of an over-ager in Junior, was over a point per game last season in the OHL and is ahead of that pace this year. On paper, he looks ready for the AHL or ECHL now, but of course I haven't seen him play. Anyone have any insight into his game?

Tons of size (6'3", 210 according to the OHL site). I guess one of those boom or bust signings, maybe? Looks like Gillis is still looking for some of the long-term bottom 6 answers.

There's some good stuff on him on Brock's OHL blog:
http://ohlprospects.blogspot.com/sea...en%20Archibald

Apparently he's been really high on Archibald for a couple years. Big, can skate, hits, good hands/shot! How'd this guy go undrafted?

Couple of fight videos

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Teb80...eature=related

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WzIrMOFeGDw

Gives you an indication of one aspect of his game

Shows here he had an invite to the Detroit camp - which is never a bad sign

Because a lot of people said he did not project very well to the next level. I remember the word "goon" being thrown around when speaking about his potential.

But that said, i liked him for the '09 draft and was surprised when he did not get drafted. Even a late round flyer would be good for a guy with his size. But he got camp invites every year since, i believe. So at least more than 2 teams could see the potential in him.

He just got traded to Friesen's team, so i can definitely dig up some recent articles regarding him.

http://forum.icedogfans.com/showthread.php?t=6548
http://www.stcatharinesstandard.ca/A...aspx?e=2882619

Also TSR had him #100 of their top #100 for last years draft. Scouting report here:
Quote:
#100. Darren Archibald | LW | Barrie (OHL)

Date of Birth: February 9th, 1990
Height: 6.03
Weight: 195lbs.
Shoots: L
Season Statistics: Regular Season | 57GP 26G 33A 59P 62PIM
Playoffs | 16GP 5G 5A 10P 16PIM
TSR Midterm Rank: NR | Position Rank: 65th Forwards
League Rank: 28th OHL | Country Rank: 52nd Canada
Archibald concludes TSR’s rankings after surprisingly going undrafted a year ago. There is a lot of talk that the 19 year old will be a mid-round selection this year, however, after providing steady play for the Colts all season long. Some nights he has the ability to be the best player on the ice, combining his physical play with soft hands, a package that should ensure that he doesn’t go undrafted again in Los Angeles.

He does come off looking like a bit of an idiot in his youtube videos. Body checking the goalie? Being man-handled fight after fight?

Well if he can score and isn't a total **** starter in the locker room maybe we'll have a player.

Darren Archibald (2010, but 1990 born)
This guy is just phenomenal. I'm going to make a pretty blunt statement here, but I think he's the best power forward in the OHL right now. The guy has 8 goals and 12 assists in his last 11 games. He hits hard (crunched Stuart Percy hard into the boards tonight), he drops the gloves, and he's very skilled for a big man. His best asset might be his wrist shot which is very hard and very accurate. He uses his size and speed to allow him space to get it off too. I'll run over the goals he scored to accumulate his third period hat trick. First one cutting down the wing on a 2 on 1, he absolutely wired a wrist shot over a sliding Stuart Percy and over J.P. Anderson's shoulder to the back of the net. Second goal was off that beautiful Brodie lob pass on the powerplay. But he showed incredible hands at the side of the net to finish off the pass by one timing it over Anderson's shoulder yet again. Hat trick goal he found a loose puck in the slot and wired top shelf yet again. Puck was on his stick and to the back of the net in a split second. Did I mention he also hit the crossbar in the first period too? Did I also mention he saved an easy tap in goal with some excellent work on the penalty kill by lunging with his stick to disrupt a pass to an open man at the side of the net? Darren Archibald is a beast in this league, plain and simple.
Best case scenario: Rene Bourque

One of the guys I was looking for as a late round flyer last year, as well as in the 2009 draft.

There were speculations that there were character issues that caused teams to shy away from him, as well as how well his skills should project to the next level. However, his play and growth through last year and this year should've laid some of these fears to rest.

Optimistic about this for free signing.

Yes, i'd categorize this one as optimistic. He'll be in a smaller role for Niagara, as they are stacked up top, compared to Barrie, but i can see him moving up and still putting up points. What i like is that we don't really have a guy like him in our system right now, Oreskovich is close though. He will undoubtedly be going to the Moose next year.

Brock has made a post about the signing:
Quote:
The Canucks are getting a complete player who can do a little bit of everything and who (IMO) should develop into at least a serviceable checking line winger with goal scoring ability. Congrats to Darren (Here's an interview with Darren about the signing. Clearly he's a happy camper).

This seems out of character for Gillis. Archibald reminds me of Kyle Beach, no?

Gillis was apparently impressed with beach during their interviews and liked his game. He just felt Cody was the better pick of the two. If Cody wasn't available at the 10 spot, there's a very good chance gillis would have taken beach. I think wetcoaster has the details on this one

Saw him play a game against the Belleville bulls this year, and he man handled them. 2 goals and an assist. Huge physical presence

Decent signing, seems like a guy who has pretty good upside. Best case scenario, he'll be a solid bottom-6 player, worst case scenario he's minor league fodder, no big deal considering we got him for "free". Just a question though, will he continue to play in the OHL this year (I'm gonna assume yes) and does his contract count against the maximum for the year?

That hit on Windsor's goalie did look a hell of a lot like something Beach would do. Beach has done things like that on a semi-regular basis though, has Archibald?

It's also a pretty huge difference with what you do #10 overall vs what you do with your undrafted UFA signings. I mean you don't want to waste contract spots but if he busts will anyone remember in 10 years? I still remember Jason Herter

Nothing wrong with this move at all. Hungry kid for the Moose next year. Good to see the Canucks are willing to spend a bit of money to try and gain an asset.

Nothing to be upset about here. Free prospect who's doing great in the OHL.
