Ok so I was wondering, who do you guys consider the better player? I've seen several people claiming Giroux was considered the better player, even by the Flyers' fanbase. Considering these two are on the same team, I don't think there will be any bias in voting and I also think you're probably the most knowledgeable on the game of these two. So, who's the better player overall?
Better at playing hockey? All aspects are considered, defensive play, offensive talent, playmaking, goalscoring, faceoffs, physicality etc.
I'll give Carter the edge in goal scoring of the list you mentioned. And that's only because of past seasons. This year, Carter has 2 less goals than Giroux on 63 more shots. His shooting percentage is below 10 for Christ's sake.
Carter rarely gets his linemates involved as much as he should, his defensive play is mediocre at best, he has a wicked wrister but it's often not on net and when it is it's saved 90% of the time because it's from some ridiculous angle or it's right at the goalie's logo, Giroux owns Carter in playmaking abilities and is no longer a Center so faceoffs are kind of irrelevant now. And Carter's about as physical is a quadriplegic.
Carter is not just "mediocre" defensively. He's very good defensively.
Giroux is slightly better, and plays the PK over him primarily because he's more dangerous with Richards. Nodl is probably about on par with Carter defensively.
Shot - Carter
Skating - Carter
Acceleration - Carter
Size - Carter
Faceoffs - Carter
Defense - Giroux
Passing - Giroux
Puck Handling - Giroux
Vision/Awareness - Giroux
Physicality - Giroux
Boardwork - Giroux
Breakaway/Shootout - Giroux
Claude Giroux can doo doo, but Jeff Carter is smarter!
Giroux has much better hockey sense and is a better passer, but Carter has the edge in skating, defense, shooting and faceoffs. Overall, I'd go with Carter now; Giroux has the potential to mature into a better all-around player, though.
I'm sorry, I just fail to see this huge "up side" to Carter that everyone else sees. I was hoping we'd move him but instead he's here for another 11 years. Beautiful.
Giroux is not better than Carter at D, at least not yet. And he isn't better physically. They are equal physicality
No dice. Giroux is better than Carter defensively.
Also, they are a different type of physical. Giroux is more aggressive in his physicality while Carter is more like a giant robot who people bounce off of though he doesn't necessarily start the contact or seek it out.

I think that ties in to his (Carter's) defensive abilities, he is not aggressively physical, but he does have size and wing span which helps him in that role well of clogging passing lanes and not being easily moved in the slot in his own zone. I do believe though that Giroux is the headier player in all zones and that includes his own end in making subtle plays that remind me of Timonen's ability to strip pucks from players in their own zone and transition it to offense very quickly.
But I can see how people rank Carter at even or slightly better than Giroux in his own end and I think that is directly related to his extra reach, IMO.

I can see why as well, and it's perfectly fine if people think that way.
I however believe Giroux is better. Not even torture by way of Jester-argument will change that, so no reason to banter back and forth over it.
Watch him play, he is a very good defensive player. Carter may have a slight edge only because of his reach but Giroux is a more intelligent player who sees the ice better at both ends of the ice.
I am captain and I have first pick of the player, Claude Giroux seven days a week and twice on sunday.
They're very close. If Carter stays at centre it will be a better comparison but he played right wing up till last week and he's not good there. He also needs to work on his accuracy in a big way while Roo needs to work on his defence and face offs.

Where did I sat the Giroux wasn't a good defensive player? With Giroux's hockey intelligence, I have little doubt he'll become a better all-around player than Carter.
He's not better than Carter defensively, yet, and it's not just because of Jeff's reach.
I marked it as too close to call, and frankly I don't really care which one of them is better. They would be top line players on most teams in the league and I'm glad we have both.
