Literature about the WHA + pre-NHL Europe?

I'm looking to expand my history knowledge and hockey library beyond the readily available NHL knowledge base.

I know about Lawrence Martin's The Red Machine, and I've bookmarked a couple of WHA books on Amazon, but I would like to find out more about hockey in the WHA as well as Finland, Sweden, Czechoslovakia and Russia before they were accepted into the NHL.

What books or websites/articles would you guys recommend?

Not sure this is what you're looking for, but here's some info about WHA teams touring Europe in the late 70s. There are also some interesting links to be found there for further WHA history.

There used to be a weekly newspaper about the WHA similar to the Hockey News. I can't recall the name exactly, maybe the Hockey Observer. I bought a copy at Cosby's in Madison Square Garden in the first or second year of the WHA. I don't know how many years it lasted and I can't find ANY reference to it on the web. If you're ever able to track some of these down, please let us all know here on the forum.

The book Kings Of the Ice will give you more biographical info on players than you'll get anywhere else.

Also look for the IIHF anniversary books. I have the 1978, 1988, and 2005 editions I think.

Scott Young's War On Ice has lots of good info.

Tarasov's two english books, if you can find and afford them, are awesome. Russian Hockey Secrets/Road To Olympus and the Father of Russian Hockey.

Larionov and Tretiak each have books that are worth getting.

As for the WHA, try Big Bucks & Blue Pucks. You'll also learn a lot about WHA players from the old Zander Hollander annual guides as they profiled about the 8-12 most important players on every NHL and WHA team annually. Tough to find those old ones though. I'm lucky to have completed a set.

IIHF anniversery books are a good way to start but to delve deeper in non-NA hockey you need native books. Dont know how or if many of them have been translated.

Currently reading Russian Hockey Secrets. Found it at the Salvation Army for $2.

Thanks for all the info, everyone. This is good stuff and should have me searching/reading for a few months.

This is my first day on this site. I came on this thread and saw your interest in the WHA. I was a local Linesman for the WHA in Minnesota. This should give you some info about the league.
