I'm sure they can, but the question here is - why the hell would they want to? Ottawa can walk away from Kovalev at the end of the year, without taking on Jokinen's horrible contract and an old overpaid D-Man in Staios.

Also, what's the big deal with Lee and why is he the young player Calgary is looking for?

As a Flames fan, I would love this deal. But the Senators would be stupid to make this deal. I doubt Murray would have any interest in taking on Sutter's bad contracts and dig themselves in an even deeper hole to help us.

Kovalev is a fourth liner with tension with the coach. That 5 million dollars is already been hit against Ottawa, so Ottawa gets more bang for their buck by adding a 2nd/3rd liner centreman/winger and a dependable defenseman that'll listen to the coach, rather than a 5 million dollar winger that gets 5 mins of ice time.

If as in 4th line you actually mean 2nd then you are correct. Periodic spot duty on a line does not mean that is where a coach permantently plays someone. Kovalev plays wing on the second line for the Sens.

No I know. Still, Kovalev might see more 4th line duty the rest of the season if he doesn't get his act together, and considering there's tension in the locker room, Brian Murray might have no choice but to trade Kovalev to whatever team will take him. He's a sunk cost, and if someone earns more minutes than Kovelev, than Kovalev will see more 4th line minutes.

Kovalev isn't exactly a rental player at 2.5 million dollars in March, so if Murray can get something for Kovalev, then he will. Staios and Jokinen are terrible (bottom line), but so is Kovalev. Staios and Jokinen combined aren't as terrible as Kovalev IMO. Plus Jokinen won't get under the coach's skin.

If the Flames are going to weaken the blueline they need to get a much better forward back in return.
