Well, I had heard rumors that the Rangers were not going to extend an offer this summer.

I find it hard to believe that management has already made up their mind.

The title should be changed to Wings might.

There's speculation in NHL circles

“I wouldn't be surprised to see Detroit sign him,” said one NHL scout at Saturday's game.

Much conjecture from a non mainstream site.

I highly doubt they don't extend him a contract.

The article speculates that the Rangers might not sign him, and then proposes the Wings as a possible substitute.

I'm not sure I would call this a "News Article," given the source.

Yah, since the second word in the article is "speculation", I've re-tagged it as such.

I could be mistaken but I remember reading that the Rangers tried to sign him last off-season. They tried to get Kreider, McDonagh, Stepan and Hagelin all out of school and Kreider and Hagelin wanted to return.

I can't see them letting him go. He has had an outstanding year and has developed considerably while at Michigan. The Rangers had to know he was going to stay in school as I know his education is important to him and his family. They won't let him go anywhere and if the Red Wings are looking to snag him, you know there is something valuable about this kid.

I'm calling BS on this one. Sounds like the author just made something up to make a story.

As a Ranger fan and a long time observer of Hagelin, this would be devistating. Personally Hagelin will have an NHL career unless he has a devestating injury, if only as a 3rd liner, but I think he has decent 2nd line potential.

Wheels, defensive ability, a great shot that he doesn't use as much as he should, he has a great foundation as a player. There is no way ithe Rangers let him go. Horrible asset managment, and the Hagelin has too much potential and success at his current level to just let him go.

The NCAA 'free agent after 4 years' policy is awful, in my opinion. If the club offers a contract in the final year (with the total value of the contract - bonus, etc. - determined by draft position), the prospect should be obligated to sign with the club that drafted him, if he wants to play in the NHL. The Wheeler BS with Phoenix left a sour taste in my mouth - a prospect should only be unrestricted if the club who holds the draft rights doesn't tender a contract.

A load of nonsense, IMO. Hagelin will make an excellent 3rd liner at this level. Rangers will not give up on a kid who brings the same kind of game that Callahan does.

This is Hagelin's last year. If he doesnt want to sign with us, he can simply wait a couple months and go wherever he wants.

Same thing people were worried about with McDonagh, except the Rangers dont get compensation.

This sounds like a baseless speculation. What would Hagelin have against signing with the Rangers?

The Red Wings can't even talk to a player who's rights belong to a different team, can they? If you have the rights to a player, I was under the impression that it would be tampering if another NHL team had talks with him.

Any way, just because he is Swedish and plays at Michigan, he is gonna go to Detroit? It sounds good and I guess thats how they get people to read their blogs. After all, everyone of us from this site clicked on that link.

All we have been hearing about is a commitment to youth, this would be the exact opposite. Doesn't make a lick of sense.

The rangers are always signing undrafted free agents who have an outside chance at an NHL roster spot, why would they give up on Hagelin?

Hagelin is exactly the type of player the Rangers are building their team around.

Hard working guys that play well at both ends of the ice that have some grit to theri games.

It would make no sense to allow him to walk.

They just highlighted him on a Rangers broadcast, too. I call shenanigans. They wouldn't do that if the organization felt it was likely they'd lose him.

Did someone tell Glen Sather the Rangers are not going to sign Hagelin?

Quote:
"I think [Roman] Horak is going to be a good player, [Chris] Kreider for sure, [Carl] Hagelin has a good opportunity. We've got lots of good kids coming," Sather said.

While the article is most likely baseless speculation, the point isn't that we wouldn't TRY to sign Hagelin--it's that Hagelin wouldn't want to sign here, could wait a couple of months, and sign where he choses.

Yeah but that doesn't make sense. Its not like he was drafted by the Islanders or something. Players generally don't refuse to sign without valid reasons.
