First let me say I really like the Thrashers this year, I think you are in the right direction and I really like the team. I only got one question for you. Since I follow Ron Hainsey for a long time, I wonder what happen with him? I know he was a good offensive d-man and now he seem to more a defensive d-man, but he don't seem to play a lot of PK time. So I guess my question is: are you happy with is play this year?
Hainsey has been very solid this year. The hate on Ron isn't that he is a bad defensemen, it's that he's an average defensemen who makes $4.5 million a year.
Ron could still be a powerplay QB but we have 3 other defenemen who can do it better, IMHO. He was probably the best option to do it in Columbus and was here his first year but now Buff, Toby and Bogo are much more suited to score from the blue line. Even Oduya is stepping up in the scoring department.
He's a bottom pairing D, probably worth around 1/3rd of his salary tops, but the fact that he's working his *** off this season has endeared him to me much moreso than the coasting, soft as tissues, walking giveaway machine he was in the past.
Sopel and the coaching staff have taught him well, it's good to see he finally found his niche and a way to help the team win.
Worth noting that I was a huge Hainsey detractor last season. Having him on the ice was begging the other team to score the game-winner.
At $5,000,000 for 2010-11, Hainsey is GROTESQUELY overpaid.
Among Atlanta d-men, Hainsey is
6th in points
6th in TOI
4th in +/- (primarily because he doesn't get matched against other teams' top lines)
He was a very, very expensive mistake.
Meh. He's overpaid, yes, but his signing was not a mistake
His scoring is down because Ramsey isn't using him the way John Anderson had. His defensive zone play has been surprisingly solid this year. By and large, Hainsey has given us what we've asked of him: scoring and quality power play time his first few years and solid defensive play now that we have guys like Dustin Byufglien in the mix. His contract will be finishing up right as younger prospects like Kulda, Zubarev, Postma and others are ready to take his spot.
At the time i was happy that we had another player joining the club who skate faster than a hotdog and could pass the puck more than 3 feet. We had to overpay because we sucked and nobody would come and play for us otherwise. Just be happy Campbell turned us down.
