Is the KHL making money?

I ask this question here in the business forum rather than the KHL forum because it is business related.

Elliot Friedman wrote this back in April

http://www.cbc.ca/sports/blogs/ellio...ke-a-deal.html

Quoted from the article:

A packed house of 5,600 watched a good playoff game between Moscow Spartak and Lokomotiv Yaroslavl. Average ticket price? About $10 Cdn., I was told.

Three nights later, I watched a practice in Ufa, home of the KHL's regular-season champion. That very nice rink seats 8,200. Cheapest ticket? $3. Most expensive? About $30.

Doesn't seem like a very good business model.

Does anyone have any better information on whether the KHL is making any money?

I don't think it's supposed to. Just like the individual teams are financed by sponsorship and what basically amounts to donations, the KHL is subsidized mostly by the Russian government and Gazprom - the state-owned oil and gas corporation.

Medvedev, the KHL commish, is on the Gazprom board of executives. It's basically a charity financed by Gazprom.

It's not intended to be a profit-based business like North American leagues are. This is how a lot of European sports are run.

That said, I have no idea if it makes money or not. I'm just saying it doesn't really matter.

Well if you look at the bottom line of the bottom half of the NHL teams. It could be argued they don't make money either.

Basically every single league in Europe in every sport is ran the same way, money comes from sponsorships. This is why when you look at any club in any league, their jerseys are covered in ads, the ice is covered in ads along with the boards. When a clubs major sponsor goes under, the club will pretty much follow right along with it as a company would rather pay its workers then a sports club.

As for the KHL, no, it dosnt make money, atleast not at the moment and depending on if you believe Medvedev, the league wont make money for the next 5-10 years. The only club in the KHL that is anywhere close to bringing in a profit in Latvian based club Dinamo Riga who by far has the highest gate entry and spends only the money it has or is given to it from sponsors.
I believe last year Dinamo Riga made a profit or broke even but Im not 100% sure on this.

No... This means that the Panthers will be relegated to the KHL.

Hey - if the move meant they actually had a chance of winning I would be all for it.
