Anaheim - Vancouver

So Anaheim Fans, I have two proposals, both for Todd Marchant.

Proposal One, I offer

Aaron Rome
Alex Bolduc

With the troubles on defense in Anaheim and Aaron Rome stepping his game up I think he would be a good fit back in Anaheim. He has shown that he can log respectable minutes, and has been nothing but reliable in Vancouver. Alex Bolduc is just getting his feet wet at the NHL level, but at this point can be relied upon as a 4th line center, as he is solid defensively and continues to improve.

Second Proposal I offer is

Sergei Shirokov for Marchant + late round pick

With Selanne being a FA next year, and Koivu/Blake being free agents the year after that Shirokov could be a handy prospect to have in your pool. He wants to play in North America and has shown some flashes of brilliance. He could use another year or 2 in the AHL to help him become a consistant player, and his defense could use some help, but playing in Manitoba the coaching staff preaches defensive-responsibility.

Shirokov is getting stuck behind Cody Hodgson and Jordan Schroeder in terms of making the jump to the NHL and he likely won't get the chances he needs in Vancouver.

Thoughts?

No interest in Rome. We have a lot of 3rd pairing dmen like Rome.

The Shirokov proposal might be interesting. He's an RFA after this season, but he would likely be offered less than his current $1.1M. Without knowing much about him, we would be concerned that he could leave the NHL once his contract expires. I like that he is a natural LW, which we lack except for Blake.

Shirokov could easily be making millions already in KHL last season, he has chose to stay here to try and make it in the NHL.

But that proposal doesn't really help Vancouver shed cap hits, and is really pointless, unless Anaheim takes back equal cap hits, Vancouver can't even play Marchant.

From what I have heard and am aware of (don't have any links, sorry) Shiro really wants to play in the NHL/North America. He's said that its his goal to play in the NHL and he doesn't want to play in Russia. Take it for what its worth but I don't see him going to Russia unless his NHL career doesn't pan out.

In my opinion he is one of those guys who needs to develop a lot in the AHL because he is more of a top-6 guy, and wouldn't do well in a bottom 6 role. Has a lot of skill, and has shown plenty of promise.

Wouldn't surprise me to see Gillis deal Shirokov fairly soon, there's not a lot of space in our top 6 right now and Samuelsson has two more years on his contract

Ok. Then finally Fowler can play with Sbisa instead of the two covering for old, slow veterans all the time!

Ducks have 8 NHL d-men at the moment.

One of Mara, Lilja or Brookbank would have to go the other way.

The second deal is better.

Vancouver is not trading kids for a smallish thirty seven year old guy.

No thanks to both. But the first one is closer IMO.

Marchant has been valuable to the Ducks. He's a small, fast, penalty killing small guy with a very reasonable salary hit.

I'd hate to see him go but how about something in terms of salary and Shirokov going the Ducks way and Marchant + other stuff going to the Canucks?

Todd Marchant is still a very useful player. Very good defensively, very smart, lots of playoff experience, pk, faceoff. Good idea.

He'd work out fine as a 4th line center here, and I would trade Shirokov for Marchant+, but we'll be having to clear salary as it is. Even Shiro+Bolduc for Marchant+ would still not cover the difference in cost, being how close to the cap we are when everyones healthy and dealt with (ie Salo/Bieksa). Any trades involving the Canucks would have to be completely calibrated and tuned to our cap situation, and thats before our needs or wants come into play....I don't want to lose anyone on the waiver wire because of juggling on our bottom line.
