Other birds?

Seriously, the "Hawks" name seems to originate from when the team was located in Illinois and called "Tri-Cities Blackhawks." It appears that once moved to Atlanta, they dropped the "black" part and marketed the team as being named after a bird instead.

As for the Falcons, according to Wikipedia, the name was suggested by a teacher from Griffin, GA (Atlanta suburb ~35mi south of the city), and chosen as the contest winner.

The Blackhawks became the Hawks when they moved to Milwaukee in 1951. They moved to St. Louis in 1955. They moved to Atlanta in 1968 after being sold to Tom Cousins and former GA Gov. Carl Sanders.

I knew there had to be more to the story. All I caught was the original name, then the fact they moved here.

As evidenced, I don't keep up with basketball. Personally, it bores the hell out of me.
