He's preparing his resignation....

Or maybe we're trading for Vinny.... or for Iginla. Or for Brad Richards - and he needs time to prepare the team for the new star.

Maybe the players are on strike....

Or maybe it's another drug story...

Or maybe he things the players are tired - and wants them to get some rest...Nah - too simple.

I think perhaps it's a matter of no practice hits harder than bag skate. The players probably all expected a hard practice, and he threw a curve ball and when that happens, professional players usually feel guilty and work their ass off next game.

This
Martin knows his group is full of smart players that care. They have the maturity to play much harder on their own.

Good on him if he did cancel practice, nothing more hard hitting then telling your staff they can stay away today, it will make them think long and hard about the situation they are in. Stick to the game plan and we are in every game, deviate from it and look at what happens.

The best punishment for not working hard is to ... stop work altogether?

Sounds like Andrei Kostitsyn's idea.

They had a workout after the game yesterday,

you can't just always punish a team over and over or we will loose the other game to.

To all present or future parents. You do not punish your kid because "he deserves it". You punish him when you think it makes sense in order to change his behavior.

If you punish your kid because you are frustrated and think he is responsible for your frustration, all you teach him is that aggression is the adequate behavior when frustrated. Hardly worth teaching.

We don't know what's happening in that lockerroom and team. JM has info that we do not have and he is a good teacher, not an emotional one. His job is to win games in the long run, and to get there sometimes you need to punish - sometimes you need to give them a carrot.

Working the team into the ground wouldn't make it any better. The problem isn't effort, the Habs just just aren't as good as Colorado or Dallas, especially without Markov. The only advantage we have on those teams is goaltending.

It's like when you do something so bad, so stupid, that your mom just tells you how disappointed she is and can't even be bothered punishing you.

Not a big deal.

While it's a natural feeling to be angry after seeing the way the Habs played last night, the way I see it is ; it's the equivalent to a father not punishing his child for disobeying them, but telling them "I just want you to know that I am deeply disappointed in you".

May not seem serious, but that sort of guilt really hits you like a ton of bricks. Plus, it's better then to keep forcing bag skates during practice, when it didn't work the first time. Perhaps a different approach may help.

Frankly, this reassures me. The Habs aren't in a state where they need panic moves, bag skates, random benchings and what have you. A steady hand and some stability will see them through this.

I was worried Martin would make another boneheaded message-sending move, but it looks like he's going to try a different tack. Whew.
