With Wey making Team USA, Capitals prospects are playing in 8 of the 9 preliminary round games scheduled to be shown on the NHL Network in the US and TSN/TSN2 in Canada!

Team USA:

2 Goalies: Campbell and Iles

7 Defensemen: Dumoulin, Faulk, Forbort, Leddy, Merrill, Ramage, Wey

13 Forwards: Bjugstad, Bourque, Brown, Callahan, Coyle, D'Amigo, Etem, Kreider, Morin, Nelson, Palmieri, Shore, Zucker
I keep trying to tell you all that Wey is going to keep surprising you the longer he is around. His game is very hard to evaluate unless you know what you are looking for. I believe his skill set will be more obvious as the tournament unfolds and the competition gets stronger. But folks watching will rarely notice him on the ice unless he makes a mistake.

Waterloo is fired up!
Go USA!

Yeah that is pretty awesome that Wey made the WJC team. Quite a feather in the Caps' scouting staff's cap I would think and while I would love the Caps to keep him you'd have to think he'd bring someone pretty decent like Ruth did a few years ago at the deadline. Regardless he is a great asset to have in the system.

And I have told you, I was impressed with Wey (and I was not the only one) when I saw him at the Caps development camp the last 2 summers. It's great he made the team, but as you have acknowledged in previous posts, the Team USA defensive depth meant it was going to be a challenge to make the team. Glad he met the challenge!

His next battle will be to actually get on the ice...I assume they will dress 6.

But I still think he will leave his mark on this tournament before it is over.

His old Coach P.K. O'Handley told us a long time ago that Wey would make some noise down the road at the professional level not only because of his potential as a player but because of the type of person the kid was, much like Joe Pavelski who remains the gold standard from Waterloo. Coach will not be surprised to see Wey's name on the final list and will probably speak about it today.

Anyone have a comparable player in mind for Wey? I can't explain it fully but when I saw him in camp I saw a bit of Bob Rouse, a stay at home tough right side D man.

That's great he made the team, I hope he does well. I have long thought our right side OD is lacking. And somewhat one dimensional - offensive looking at Green Carlson and Godfrey.

You're allowed to dress 13F/7D so he'll play for sure.

That great, you just made my day if true!

We will enjoy watching him killing penalties, blocking shots, and protecting leads!

Good for Wey. Honestly I don't remember this many Caps' prospects playing in the WJC. At least definitely not spread out on nearly all the teams.

This year the count is 4 teams (Germany, Russia, USA, Canada) and 5 or 6 players depending on what happens with Galiev.

Just the last few years (someone help me out and fill in anyone I missed, thanks):

2005: Bourque, Hedman, Ovechkin, Yunkov

2006: Bourque, Hedman, Pokulok, Yunkov

2007: Backstrom, Osala, Varlamov

2008: Alzner, Godfrey, Neuvirth (IIRC, Varlamov was injured)

2009: Kugryshev, SDR

2010: Carlson, Johansson, Orlov, SDR

A number of draft picks played in the WJCs before they were drafted by the Capitals or in Ruth's case after he was traded.

He wasn't a Caps prospect at the time, though, which was Sk8's point (Alzner played in more than one as well, but only one after he was drafted).

US coach Keith Allain on Wey:
Quote:
Patrick's another guy just like Dumoulin that, first of all, has been a key guy on a winning hockey team at the college level, and that experience is something you can't replicate. He's a guy that we also think is a good, steady puck-mover. At BC, he plays in the last minute of games where they're trying to protect the lead. And he's not strictly a defensive guy. He's got the versatility that we talked about with our hockey team. He's a guy that's going to be used in a lot of different situations for us.

Woah Orlov on the top pair. Don't know if it means he has improved that much or Russia's D is that bad.
