I thought the Flames were maxed out with 50 contracts?

I thought we already had the max of 50 contracts so I don't understand? I've heard that since we picked up Mikkelson

So it's too early to call him up then?

Good to hear! I am liking his style of play... good so see him rounding his game out as well.

Yeah, as far as I'm aware as long as he's in junior it doesn't count. I could be wrong though.

The ELC would start in June typically. If it is for this year then it means the contract will be in effect before July 1st of 2011, but they have until that time to clear room.

Junior contracts count towards the 50 contract limit though. This is more or less an agreement to sign I would assume.

I think Kronwall's contract became void when he signed with Djurgårdens. Not positive about this however...

Edit: This is more information from capgeek:

Quote:
If a player aged 18 or 19 signs an entry-level contract with a club (with his age calculated on Sept. 15 of the year he signed the contract) but does not play in at least 10 NHL games, the contract will "slide" or be extended one year. The extension does not apply if the player turns 20 between Sept. 16 and Dec. 31 in the year he signed the contract.

Depending on the contract's structure, the player's cap hit can be affected either by an increase or a decrease. Players who sign at age 18 can have their contract extended (or "slide") two seasons. CBA reference: Section 9.1 (d) (P. 23-24)
Still doesn't explain 51 contracts though.

Like I said, I think it is an agreement to sign. The actual contract doesn't come into effect till June in which case they have until then to remove another contract.

No such thing as an agreement to sign. He's either signed, or he isn't.

I seen him play here in Lethbridge a few weeks ago, He looks pretty good, he got 2 goals, he looks small out there but is really strong on his skates. Should be good for the Flames down the road!

Actually there is...You basically sign the contract, but it doesn't come into effect until a certain date. Its like a job offer, you can sign the contract of employment but the contract doesn't start until 2 weeks later or something depending on the start date as stated by the contract.

In effect it would mean that it doesn't count as a contract against the Flames reserve list.

As he is a junior player and not playing pro (and not getting paid) his contract gets bumped to next year.

He does have 39 pts in 32 game but has only 5 in his last 8. A lot of his points came early in the season.

Well Howse signing is a good move but lets be honest when will he realistically make this team? I hope next season. If the Flames do rebuild that does not mean we want to rush a player like Howse.
