I thought we already had the max of 50 contracts so I don't understand? I've heard that since we picked up Mikkelson
I think Kronwall's contract became void when he signed with Djurgårdens. Not positive about this however...
Edit: This is more information from capgeek:
If a player aged 18 or 19 signs an entry-level contract with a club (with his age calculated on Sept. 15 of the year he signed the contract) but does not play in at least 10 NHL games, the contract will "slide" or be extended one year. The extension does not apply if the player turns 20 between Sept. 16 and Dec. 31 in the year he signed the contract.
Depending on the contract's structure, the player's cap hit can be affected either by an increase or a decrease. Players who sign at age 18 can have their contract extended (or "slide") two seasons. CBA reference: Section 9.1 (d) (P. 23-24)
Still doesn't explain 51 contracts though.

No such thing as an agreement to sign. He's either signed, or he isn't.
Actually there is...You basically sign the contract, but it doesn't come into effect until a certain date. Its like a job offer, you can sign the contract of employment but the contract doesn't start until 2 weeks later or something depending on the start date as stated by the contract.
In effect it would mean that it doesn't count as a contract against the Flames reserve list.
