I'm just looking at a scenario where Burns walks away from the team and we trade Scandella...at that point our blueline is Schultz, Zidlicky, and Barker. Our young guys are Falk, Cuma, Prosser, Stoner...none of which look like top four D-men. So we'd really, really be starting from scratch.

Of course, if Burns re-signs, Scandella and Falk improve, and Barker wakes up a little, we could have a nice blueline:

Burns-Scandella
Zidlicky-Falk
Schultz-Barker

I'm thinking next year:

Burns - Scandella
Zidlicky - Schultz
Zanon - Falk/Barker/Spurgeon

That would be pretty solid IMO. Of course, if Zanon and/or Barker get moved, even better. I just don't want to think about moving Scandella and losing Burns. That would hurt, big time, a lot more than getting a top six winger would help.

well yeah. i'm making a big assumption in thinking we'll keep burns. If we lose him keeping Scandy won't come close to making up for that loss...We'd be rebuilding the blue line anyway. Don't know with who, but we might conceivably have to give ups Scandy at that point anyway to get a legitimate first pairing defenseman to run the thing.

don't want to contemplate it

Why is Burns staying a "big assumption". I've always assumed he would stay. He seems to like it here...Lord knows we need him.

Burns - Scandella
Zidlicky - Schultz/Zanon
Falk - Schultz/Zanon
Stoner

Looks just fine to me. It would allow us to give the reigns of Houston's D-corp over to Cuma. 22+ minutes, 1st pairing, #1 PP, #1 PK. Let's see what the kid's got and if he can stay healthy.

i say "big" assumption not because it's unlikely but because burns staying or leaving would have a huge impact on what moves we make. It's still an assumption, and I don't see any way we let him walk without a fierce battle but you can at least entertain a scenario where burns isn't here. ugly as that scenario would be.

I don't think anyone wants to think about it because everyone makes line ups and fantasy trades assuming he'll be here. Fact is, if he doesn't want to stay we're screwed. He could very well decide he wants to play in New York for $5 million rather than staying here for $7 and then where will we be? Picking up some of the Rags over-priced leftovers that they shed to pay pay for him? It's pretty much a doomsday scenario.

Another reason not to load up on overpriced UFA's this summer...if Burns goes, the team is toast anyway.

I don't know guys, Ranger fans here are fairly sure they're getting Burns in 2012...

Spurgeon Recalled

Was obvious since Zidlicky is out for at least 2 weeks.

Who would you have recalled then?

IMHO, he proved enough to Chuck Fletcher and the staff that he can play in the NHL if needed.

I'm not so worried about this call up.

I'm more worried about losing Zid than I am about gaining Spurgeon.

Agreed. As much as some of us would prefer not to admit it, Zidlicky has been playing pretty well for a while now and is one of the team's best defenseman. If he's out for a long while, it's going to be a pretty significant hit to the team, especially on the PP.

i've been freely admitting my newfound respect for Zid this season! he was my goat the last two.
Has Noreau played that poorly? Why hasn't he had a turn on the bus?

I asked Russo a couple weeks back if he ever though Noreau would get a shot and he said no. I think he might be trade bait.

I've said this several times...

Maxime Noreau is our version of Brett Sterling. Great in the AHL, won't ever make it in the NHL.

I know Noreau does fairly well offensively in Houston, is he just a defensive liability?

That was my impression of him last season when we went to Aeros games. He had a great start to the season, but he had cooled off considerably in the second half. All of our road trips were in that second half.

He just seems meek and doesn't make the greatest decisions. If he had the upper body strength of a Marc Andre Bergeron, I would maybe see him at a 6/7 on a bad team (like the Wild). He doesn't, though, and he was getting bumped off the puck far too easily when I saw him.

You know how Spurgeon plays big for his size? Noreau doesn't.

With the fact that Noreau was a DR/TT recruit, and has watched Scandella, Spurgeon, Falk, and Prosser all see more NHL action in the past 10 months, I'd have to assume he's leaving the organization at the end of the year, unless he really likes it in Houston. He's obviously not going to play for the Wild unless we rack up 4-5 injuries.

Won't be a huge loss though. He's not an NHL d-man. Krupp's probably going to be alot worse, but at least he's got size and bloodlines. More than Noreau has going for him in terms of an actual d-man.

Plus it's not like the Wild need an offensive defenseman.

Noreau or Prosser. We've seen enough from Spurgeon to know that he's not going to win you a game. The fact that Chuck Fletcher and the staff like Spurgeon is enough to dislike him called up.
