Neil Smith/Fan590 - GM discussion

This interview from today (December 31st) makes no mention of the NYI, but some parts of it could be applied to Snow and his plan.

Comments?

Is Smith as "naive" (according to the haters) as Snow with regards to having a plan, telling the fans the plan, and sticking with it no matter what?

i don't think anyone objects to sticking to a plan. it's just that the way the Islanders are implementing it is what is wrong.

We all agree that building through the draft is the way to go. But you still need to give your young players quality NHL veterans to play with. PA Parenteau is on the 1st line/1st PP unit and he's probably the 7th best forward this team has. Those are 3 serious problems.

"It's a much harder plan to try to rebuild and try to be good at the same time, and that's what they're trying to do in Toronto. It's not a criticism, just an observation."

"You could make a lot more trades in my day than you can now."

Patton had a PLAN. Smith has one. I've made many. PLANs generally are good.

But you don't spend on the necessary items, go cheap, rush prospects, implement a system they are guaranteed to not be fit for, embrace losing....some plan by Snow.

But Neil Smith is using one, so Snow must have been right all along, eh?

"Sim, to Tavares, back to Parenteau.....and the puck is in the neutral zone"
"***** is out with a groin pull(undisclosed lower body injury)"

This was a bad PLAN.....but not far from a good one. Just add vets and a real coach who knows what the **** he's doing and chain and gag our owner to the basement wall of a Hollywood pawn shop.

Also..."Stick to your plan no matter what"

" In NY they say you can't do a full rebuild..they won't stand for it"

Then he said

Quote:
They'll stand for it in New York, Toronto, or anyplace, if you tell them they have to.
I guess that doesn't apply to the NYI

islanders plan
build a slow team and have a coach that plays a up tempo system
fire coach after realizing your mistake
call up your minor league coach and tell him to erase the system from his mind and trap instead .

When people speak about the Isles the leave out the most important piece of information and that is over the past x number of years the franchise has become a laughing stock. I think the Isles not landing "legit" free agents has as much to do if not more with our reputation than it does the building or anything else.

Think about everything we have done that leaves a lasting impression. Traded Luongo, Bertuzzi, McCabe, Rights to Spezza, Redden ect. Before that we missed the playoffs for 7 straight seasons. No playoff round wins since 1993. Giving Yashin a 10 year deal. Firing Laviolette, Hiring/Firing Nolan. Giving DiPietro a 15 year contract. Hiring/Firing Neil Smith in a month. Replacing Smith with the teams backup goalie. Releasing Trottier and Jankowski. Firing Gordon for what is being viewed as not playing DiPietro. Banning your only reporter from the arena. Do I need to go on?

Snow can try anything he wants the truth is players (human beings) do not want to join a franchise viewed as a laughing stock. The only chance Snow has to right this ship is to draft well and have the franchise start winning and reshape its own reputation.

Not an easy task but the only chance we have. Another big part of that is keeping Wang quiet and uninvolved with hockey decisions.
