I see no reason why Kennedy can't do everything that Dupuis does. I actually like those lines a lot too. I think Kennedy would be a good fit with Crosby since Kennedy is more of a grinder type, and that's how Crosby likes to play the game. Then you have 2 big bodies to play with Malkin and create space for him. Finally there is Letestu and Jeffrey who are defensively responsible who can also chip in offensively, and Cooke can be throwing hits.
That lineup would likely leave us about 4 or 5 million in unused cap space. If Shero is confident that Jeffrey and Tangradi are going to play those kind of roles he could conceivably sign a Kaberle or Pitkanen and trade Gogo and Kennedy for a legit top six right winger.

Yeah, that works too. I just think there aren't a whole lot of great UFA options this summer at wing. Do you want to pay 3.5 or 4 million for a second line winger that more likely than not shots left? I think we need a right hand shot that skates well or has a good physical/net presence game and I don't see much that fits the bill in this UFA class of forwards. On the other hand there are many options for the kind of D that work in the Pens system in this UFA class.

The I suspect supply of wingers that fit our needs would be better in the trade market.

Head coach Dan Bylsma said that center Jordan Staal will be a game-time decision for the Winter Classic!!!! A significant upgrade from the day-to-day status

Damn you beat me to the post...

Awesome news though, glad he is so close to breaking the line up even if he doesn't play tomorrow.

I agree with you on most counts, and most Kennedy supporters will remember he was a completely whipping boy for me during the off season. But with the cap space we would have left it would be better just to keep TK in a 3rd line RW role and bring in a free agent in the off. Otherwise we would have millions of unused salary.

Assuming the salary cap goes up 2M to 61.4M...

CAPGEEK.COM CAP CALCULATOR

FORWARDS
Chris Kunitz ($3.725m) / Sidney Crosby ($8.700m) / Tyler Kennedy ($0.900m)
Eric Tangradi ($0.845m) / Jordan Staal ($4.000m) / Evgeni Malkin ($8.700m)
Matt Cooke ($1.800m) / Mark Letestu ($0.750m) / Dustin Jeffrey ($0.550m)
Chris Conner ($0.550m) / Maxime Talbot ($0.850m) / Craig Adams ($0.550m)
/ UFA/WBS ($0.550m)

DEFENSEMEN
Paul Martin ($5.000m) / Zbynek Michalek ($4.000m)
Brooks Orpik ($3.750m) / Kristopher Letang ($3.500m)
Alex Goligoski ($1.833m) / Deryk Engelland ($0.550m)
/ Ben Lovejoy ($0.525m)

GOALTENDERS
Marc-Andre Fleury ($5.000m) /Brent Johnson ($0.600m)

CAPGEEK.COM TOTALS (follow @capgeek on Twitter)
(these totals are compiled without the bonus cushion)
SALARY CAP: $61,400,000; CAP PAYROLL: $57,179,166; BONUSES: $127,500
CAP SPACE (22-man roster): $4,220,834

Thats over 4M in cap space. Which would make us be able to land someone in the likes of Williams, Jokinen, Ryder, or Fleischmann, etc. Which just one of those guys put on that top line, then TK dropped back down to L3/RW makes the roster even deeper.

I trust that they'll make the correct decision with him but it's hard to imagine that putting in Staal for the Winter Classic for his first game back could be the right decision. Still though, I'd like to see him play in it.

My prediction if he does play is that he will center the 4th line, low mins, readjust to the game between Adams and Asham. If he is going to play thatd seem like the correct thing to do.

I just listened to his press conference too, and he said that the plan was to play Jordan on the PK with limited minutes and at center with Malkin on the wing. I don't have a link or quote, but go to the Pens main site and listen to Byslma's interview today following their skate at Heinz Field.

Watch Staal step on the ice for the pre-game and his foot falls off.
