I'm not sure how I feel about that....it doesn't affect me, but I would have Rolo over Leights.... and I wouldn't want EiTHER.

Celebration is a little bit too soon. Until he's claimed or sent down, he's still on the roster. Just because you waive someone, doesn't always mean he's gone for good.

Not surprised by the move but def the timing. I thought they would wait until walker is closer to come back then waive both as that would give them cap space to make a deal. Unless they have a deal in the making waiving him now is risky as you don’t need the cap space right now and if someone gets hurt your screwed because Leighton would get claimed imo on reentry

as GKJ said he doesnt have to be sent down, forgot that part.

I don't see anyone claiming him. Tampa was the only team in dire need of a starter and they just got Roloson. No one is desperate for a 1.55 mil backup.

That's what I'm thinking. Still odd either way though. Only way this makes sense to me is if Leighton is still injured and either lied about feeling okay or didn't know he was still injured.

If they knew Leighton wasn't 100% then why bring up in the first place? If he isn't injured, then why waive him from Holmgren's standpoint?

Not complaining, I'm happy about this, I'm just really surprised.

isn't riopel doing pretty good lately for the phantoms? i could see the flyers dealing backlund if leighton doesn't get claimed or loaning one of the 3 to another ahl team at least.

He was until Stewart came in and all of a sudden looked like a legit goalie. The Phantoms are on a 3 game win streak, and he has been the hottest goalie in the league (not saying he is nhl caliber, etc). He has given up 2 goals, 1 goal, and 2 goals respectively. So atm, if someone gets hurt, he would probablly be called up.

It's about time. Thanks for last season, but who really wants to bet that it happens again with Leighton? It's time to move on. If he clears, does he just chill in Philly? We don't really have room in Adirondack.

Someone had better check the Burrard Street, Granville island and Lyons Gate bridges in Vancouver to make sure his biggest fan isn't about to jump.

But my Leighton jersey should be here in two weeks! Now what???

I personally like Leighton, but not as the starter on a Cup contender.
The funny thing is when the NHL issues the waiver list each afternoon, it reads:
Michael Leighton (NOT YET)
Today, they removed the "not yet" label. I wonder if Leighton is the league leader in being waived?? Anyone know of a player waived more in their career, at least in the past 20 years?

I don't think anybody will claim him. Those first two goals against LA were absolutely horrendous. AHL goalies don't usually allow 1 of those let alone 2. Hopefully he gets healthy and gets a chance somewhere else. Nothing against the guy I just think he stinks.

So when Walker gets waived they can trade Zherdev for a 3rd line winger. 1.55 for Leighton, 1.7 for Walker and 2.0 for Zherdev - maybe they can pick up a 3.5-4mm contract for somebody's slightly overpaid, defensively responsible winger. Maybe one of those teams that just cannot score - there are several of them. He could sure help some teams. He's got 13 goals with minimal ice time, 4th line sometimes, gets scratched and doesn't play PP.

I personally would like Clutterbuck (though it would take more than Zherdev of course) or Tootoo (though Nashville would want more probably) but both of these guys have cheap contracts - ideas?

Irrespective of how great of a goaltender Leighton is or is not,

It is an obnoxious reminder when I see him on tv.

Glad he's gone, just for that.

I agree. Why would they make this move now? Something is either going down or they are trying to free up some surplus cap space to accrue for the trade deadine. Although I'm not sure how prorated contracts work. They could be making a trade soon though.

he wont be claimed and will be on the Flyers roster once he does. Just because he was waived doesnt mean he goes to the AHL.

So Holmgren signed this lying stiff before free agency even determined his market value and now waives him....umm yeah not surprised. At least he is acknowledging is eff up. Hopefully he does the same with Walker and to a lesser extent Zherdev. Shelley seems locked on this team unfortunately but is still another dumb signing.

Funny how a large majority of realists on this board were saying it was an ill-advised signing (Leighton) even before it was revealed the dude lied about his back which probably affected him in the finals as well since he said it went "back" that far (playoffs). Holmgren again was loyal to a fault to a player who did not negotiate with him equally in good faith so now we have to hope that some stupid team picks up his dumb overpaid salary and his rickety back with a dead foot to boot. Umm yeah and Tim Thomas was supposedly the cripple....

Anyway, addition by subtraction...he has reclaimed his nickname "suitcase"...BTW thanks for your 80% save percentage and worst goal in NHL finals history....ahh bye bye...

I don't hate the guy, but Boucher and Bob have earned the right to be the two. No need for him in Philly.
