Yep. It happens more often than people realize. These kids are very young and sometimes you have to take a step backwards in order to take 2 steps forwards. I am confident in Schony down in Hartford and the work he does with the young defensemen.

now that is a wake up call. Exited to see McD but hate to see DZ struggle in the same breath. Lets hope McD does great and MDZ bounces back quick

LOL that's funny because I called him up in NHL '11 and he was given #27.

But anyways we bring him up and he's gona be a healthy scratch?? I don't agree with that. I do understand that Gilroy has played well and I totally agree that he should be in the lineup but I don't understand calling up McD just to sit in the press box. That doesn't really help his development especially when it seems as though he has gotten into a groove in CT.

Anyways...this doesn't solve our problem with Fedotenko. I guess Torts and management are just gona with til it gets closer to the game to make a last minute decision on who to call up if Feds doesnt get better.

It isn't the worst thing in the world. Just getting 5-6 days of practice can be a great experience for a young player. Going up against Gaborik and Dubinsky will show him some things. As well as talking and listening to the d-men already in NY.

Disagree. I think he'll benefit from being around the team, practicing with them, generally soaking up the experience without the immediate pressure to perform.

I don't mind this move at all. MDZ has been our worst defense man this year. He hasn't brought his offensive element to the game. Has been a factor as the QB to our PP. His defensive play still struggles. If you cannot bring an offensive game to the table as a defense man AND can't play well defensively then you have no part on the team.

The kid has a lot of talent. He is have a major sophomore slump. A brief stint in the AHL for a few weeks will do him some good. Build up his confidence, realize he still has it and push him back in the NHL.

I'm glad we can do it this year. Last year we couldn't send him down because we'd have to waive him to Juniors for the entire year. This time we can actually look at the mistakes he makes and treat him appropriately.

Not to mention that he gets NHL level meal money and the chance to see the Christmas windows at Macy's.

sweet McD defensive upside is way more valuable to us right now than MDZ offensive upside (or lately, lack thereof)

the rangers will have a better chance to win without MDZ in the lineup (at least it seems that way over the last few weeks)

better to get some minutes in the AHL than the pressbox as MSG

plus he can get some tips from WADE REDDEN

Interesting how things can ebb and flow huh.... Gilroy stays MDZ to the Whale.

Very psyched to see McD get his chance. I know there will be growing pains but I'm hoping this is the guy who locks down our blue line in the future.

How was he described? Pronger- lite?

I'll take it...and who knows. Maybe he'll surprise us all.

Im not so sure McDonagh even gets a game. I would imagine this would be a fairly brief demotion for Del Zotto, while McD gets a chance to practice with the big club.

Staal-Girardi
Rozsival-Eminger
Gilroy-Sauer

will probably hold down the fort in the meantime.

Not sure how I feel about this. But if MDZ gets the help he needs in the Whale I guess I can't complain too much...

Didn't think he was playing that badly though, not any worse than Gilroy.

Well I'm surprised. It will probably be awkward between MDZ and Redden, though.

It's not that as much as the 70 games (including last season) prior to sitting out.

hooray! Sather got my fax.
MDZ down will be good like when Cally got sent down several years ago.
McD up is probably like Grachev getting called up. More deserving players, but he's seen as a bigger part of the future core and with greater potential so hopefully a taste of the bigs will embiggen his game.

Thankfully Michel Bergeron and Roger Neilson didn't attempt to micromanage Leetch who needed a compass in his own zone when was in his 2nd and 3rd years.

Regarding McD over Valentenko

Jim Schoenfeld

Bergeron's legacy will always be that he let Leetch do whatever he wanted.

another case of an underager being rushed up too early. would've been much simpler to keep him back in london last year.

I think someone mentioned it early, in camp the defenseman needed to be spectacular and stand out to make the team. McD was very solid and had a great transition game. He will look very similar to Girardi, or even Sauer. Just playing 3rd pairing minutes and mistake free hockey to start.

I see your point but dont neccesarily agree with it. Lets see what he's got and if he struggles just send him down. It can't hurt.

Matt Gilroy went from being sent to Hartford last season after a bad performance in Chicago which was the final straw in a series of bad plays, being a healthy scratch at the end of the season(35 year old Anders Eriksson played over Gilroy)and being the #7 D for most of this season to becoming a top 6 D on the Rangers.

Quote:
Gilroy is approaching the end of the two-year, $3.5 million deal he signed as a free agent out of Boston University in April 2009. He is coming up on restricted free agency, owed a $2.1 million qualifier that is exceptionally pricey for a third-pair defenseman.

Impressive work the rest of the way, however, could earn him a multi-year offer at a smaller number while also making him more attractive to the rest of the league.
http://www.nypost.com/p/sports/range...ossuDFqEwgpNnJ

We have talked about Gilroy's contractual status. The QO and arbitration eligible status. 2 years/3 years@$1.5M per?

Trying to decipher the quotes by Torts

Quote:
"It's seeing improvement in his mindset and play on the ice," Tortorella said when asked what Del Zotto needs to show in order to earn a recall. "It's him understanding how to think the game, to think preparation, and also bring that to within his game as far as the minutes he gets there."
Read more: http://www.nypost.com/p/sports/range...#ixzz1A4IxuTKM

MDZ's head got too big for his own good and they need to bring him back to reality.

Delly wasn't happy being sent down. Gilroy wasn't happy about being sent down either last season. You want them to be pissed.
