Oilers draft fun facts 2007-Present

So like many of you I am looking forward to the 2011 draft as a light at the end of the tunnel, so I decided to share some fun facts I dug up about previous drafts and the Oilers to pass the time!

2007 Draft
In the 4th round we took Linus Omark 97th Sweden
In the 6th round we took William Quist 157th Sweden
with that pick we could have selected Johan Harju 167th Sweden, long time friend and team mate of Linus Omark plays for Tampa now, we just took the wrong Swedish winger, could have hand them playing on a line together this year(exciting)
Oilers Late Steal: We Draft Linus Omark in the 4th round, 97th
Oilers Gem: We Draft Sam Gagner in the 1st round, 6th

2008 Draft
The 3 compensation draft picks for Dustin Penner turned out to be:
In 1st round Buffalo took Tyler Myers 12th
In 2nd round Anaheim took Justin Schultz 53rd
In 3rd Round NYI took Kirill Petrov 73rd
Looks like Anaheim should have kept our first(you never know with offer sheets!)
Oilers Late Steal: we draft Teemu Hartikainen in the 6th round, 163rd
Oilers Gem: We draft Jordan Eberle in the 1st round, 22nd

2009 Draft
With drafting Magnus Paajarvi 10th and Anton Lander 40th we get it right and draft A Swedish pair from a team, line mates and friends
Trading Kyle Brodziak and pick(6th rounder Darcy Kuemper) turns into
4th rounder(Kyle Bigos) + 5th rounder(Oilvier Roy)
Oilers Late Steal: We draft Toni Rajala in the 4th round, 101st
Oilers Gem: We draft Magnus Paajarvi in the 1st round, 10th

2010 Draft
The second round does it all for the Oilers, with Tyler Pitlick at 31st, Martin Marincin 46th(Riley Nash trade) and Curtis Hamilton(Denis Grebeshkov trade) all three look to have very bright futures
Oilers Late Steal: TBD (would be nice if it was a 7th rounder Pelss or Jones)
Oilers Gem: We draft Taylor Hall in the 1st round, 1st

2011 Draft:
My hopes are high, as I think we are on pace to finish In the 1-4 range
1.Sean Couturier
2.Ryan Nugent-Hopkins
3.Adam Larsson
4.Gabriel Landeskog
I would be very excited about any of the top three!

Bottom line - don't discount 2nd rounders and package them off as completely expendable.

It seems they definitely took it to heart in 2010 and they came out like bandits.

I am not a fan of these threads this early. Either for fun or information. In 5 years wee will have a better idea on how good or bad the drafts were

Nice post thanks very much. I can't wait for this years draft. Just to find out where we end up. I want that 1st over all so bad again. Watching Larsson yesterday he is so calm with the puck and can move it so good. Has a very nice shot also.

My "fun" fact about the Oilers drafting...

1990. 11 players drafted, 0 NHL games combined from those players....and I am not talking about games played with the Oilers, but anywhere in the NHL!

Insult to injury....they had 12 picks that season...their 11th pick, 227 overall they made an invalid selection and lost the pick without compensation. (I don't know the details of that pick)

1990 NHL Entry 1 17 Scott Allison Prince Albert
1990 NHL Entry 2 38 Alexandre Legault Boston U.
1990 NHL Entry 3 59 Joe Crowley Lawrence Academy (High-MA)
1990 NHL Entry 4 67 Joel Blain Hull
1990 NHL Entry 5 101 Greg Louder Cushing Academy (High-MA)
1990 NHL Entry 6 122 Keijo Sailynoja Jokerit Helsinki
1990 NHL Entry 7 143 Mike Power Western Michigan
1990 NHL Entry 8 164 Roman Mejzlik Dukla Jihlava
1990 NHL Entry 9 185 Richard Zemlicka Sparta Praha
1990 NHL Entry 10 206 Petr Korinek Skoda Plzen
1990 NHL Entry 11 227 invalid pick
1990 NHL Entry 12 248 Sami Nuutinen Kiekko-Espoo

Well I can't blame them for their 7th pick. How do you not draft a guy named Mike Power? Isn't that the name of the serial killer/FBI guy in those episodes of Reno 911!?

If so, awesome.
