Keep in mind, different players react to different types of coaching. Maybe Boyle is the type of guy you need to rip a new one too, while, for example, Drury you need to compliment and build up their confidence.
I could see that with Boyle. He really got into it with Torts, slamming his chest and whatnot, and it seemed like it may have been for motivation reasons, since Torts kept going back and hitting him on the shoulder. Still felt bad for him though.
It was fine, he was smacking him on the shoulder like 5 times. They were both just fired up. Torts couldn't let his emotions out like that on other players. Boyle did nothing wrong.
My view on the altercation (not sure what Boyle did but......)
I suspect that Tort's loves Boyle's game. I believe that Tort's sees Boyle becoming one of the most dependable two way player on the team. As he is giving Boyle more responsibility Tort's doesn't want to see any mental errors. Torts knows that Boyle (as much as any player on the team) will handle the criticism (once he vents) and use the confrontation positively and continue to up his game.
Boyle is one of Tort's boys, and he obviously is going to treat him a little differently. He trusts Boyle on the ice, but with that comes the tough love when Boyle makes a mistake. It's probably just another sign of the confidence Torts has in Boyle and the standard that he keeps for his play on the ice.
I thought it was complimentary for the shift he had with Anisimov toward the end while on the rush. I thought it was a great play. Boyle got a little mixed up in the confusion and was slow to get back to the play, but I felt he did great (probably why I don't have a job in hockey). Torts looked like he was saying atta boy at least. Boyle has been steadily impressing me all year.
This should not be blown out of proportion by anyone here. There is no reason to analyze this. Boyle is a grown man he can take it. Torts is a good coach otherwise this not so talented squad wouldnt be where it is in the standings right now. He got his players to listen, to buy into his system and look where it has gotten them. Torts can rip whoever he wants as far as I'm concerned. Rather him do that than coddle these guys like Renney so pathetically did. These are men, not little boys. They get paid to perform. If he thinks he can do better then he should let them know. Boyle seemed to be fine with it. Torts has had nothing but good things to say about Boyle this year. Torts is just trying to get the best out of a player he probably expects more out of now because he has seen what Boyle can be capable of. He isn't a 1st round bust in Torts eyes nor should he be in anyones eyes right now because he earned that respect, he is a big part of this team's success. This guy is a top center on this team now, and torts is just treating him that way.
