Nah Rivet will be off the books next year. No need to take on Spacek's contract for that year.

I'd rather have Stafford over Kostitsyn.

You can have McCormick for Kristo if you want.

Cant Believe Buffalo says no

Basically it comes down to Kristo who has more value than McCormick

Rivet is off the books, no need for Spacek. Plus Stafford has been on fire, I have more faith in him keeping it going than AK succeeding in Buffalo.

No from Buffalo. We wouldn't give Spacek a two-year deal, and that's why he walked. So why would we want to deal for him in his third year of that deal? We wouldn't. And while contract year Spacek--the only good kind of Spacek--is enticing, we have enough #4-#6 defensemen on the roster. And right now Stafford is playing extremely well. No need to move him in a lateral move.

I'd rather allow Rivet's deal to expire, re-sign McCormick (2 yrs, $600k cap hit) and re-sign Stafford (hopefully around $2.75m).

And Stafford/Rivet > Kostytsyn and Spacek value wise.

Buffalo says no because they're taking on salary without actually improving.

Per the summer discussion I still wouldn't deal Kostitsyn for Stafford. It's close and I wouldn't blame anybody for going either way, but Kostitsyn still to me has the greater upside and is more physically consistent. Kostitsyn is in a 10-game mini-slump, so Habs fans are on his back again, but he had two really solid months before that. He's a good top-6 winger. And the Habs need to keep that element, even with the warts he has. Stafford wouldn't make things any better.

I don't really know what's up with Rivet lately. But the Habs have been #2-3-4-ish in the NHL defensive standings this year with Spacek playing 20 minutes a night, and the Sabres have been struggling and scratching Rivet. I love Rivet from the old days, but something tells me here that the Habs would be dumb to make this swap right now.

So even before you start throwing in one of our better prospects in Kristo, I pass from the Habs POV.

I think if Montreal called and asked just about Rivet? A 5th a 6th?

This deal wouldn't work for either team. Canadiens give up a solid defenseman in Spacek, who they need more than ever right now with Gorges and Markov out for the year. They also give up a solid prospect in Kristo. Meanwhile, Sabres give up their best bottom 6 winger and best fighter in McCormick (on a team that is lacking in guys who can drop the mits and hold their own). Stafford and Kostitsyn is pretty much a wash though. Both players have a lot of offensive upside, are physical forces when they want to be, but have yet to put together a full consistent season to potential in their NHL careers.

Stafford is hot right now and Kostitsyn is cold. But these players have both always been incredibly streaky. I guarantee in a month Kostitsyn will be the one on fire, and Stafford will be cold. Then we'll start seeing Buffalo fans make proposals with Stafford involved. It happens all the time.

Well, some of us loved him. Others really had him in the doghouse, even waaaay back then. At this point, it doesn't seem like he's a regular NHL player? That's sad to see. But if it's true, I don't see the Habs picking up his cap hit even for free atm. Per Commodore, at half price on re-entry... well, who knows, we have 7D, but a veteran 8th might be a reasonable depth investment at some point, if the price was low enough.

Otherwise, it's more the top end that would be the more attractive luxury addition on D. It's our best guys that are out (Markov, Gorges). Filling in with depth that isn't necessarily going to be better than our younguns isn't really of interest (to me anyway).

Not even close, unless you take Spacek back and/or Gomez.

We'll trade you a 7th in 2525 for Rivet, if you take Spacek for a 7th in 3030
