Rangers Prospect Poll: #7

With more than half the vote Ryan McDonagh took a spot in the top half dozen. I think we are all looking forward to seeing what he can do in the NHL next year.

The vote to add a new name to the vote was really close:

1. LW Roman Horak: 8
2. D Pavel Valentenko: 6
3. LW Ryan Bourque: 4
4. D Tomas Kundratek: 7
5. D Mikhail Pashin: 1

Don't forget to write-in who should be added in the next round.

TOP PROSPECTS

1. C Derek Stepan
2. LW Chris Kreider
3. RW Mats Zuccarrello-Aasen
4. D Michael Sauer
5. D Dylan McIlrath
6. D Ryan McDonagh

I will vote for Chris Thomas. Come on people!

The guy is on pace for 100 points over 72 games, and he's not even in the top-7?

He may be high risk, but he's also the prospect with the highest ceiling. No other Rangers prospect scored as much in juniors since we had Marc Savard.

On ceiling alone he deserves a spot here.

And oh yeah, Thomas is scoring more in juniors than Grachev did; he is doing it with (much) worse linemates; and he is doing it now as opposed to screwing up for two seasons.

And it's not as if he's some 7th rounder who suddenly got hot. He's a second round; just because Grachev was thought to be a flight-risk, he would not have fallen from the first to the third. At best, he'd have gone in the second round without the KHL risk.

Thomas deserves this spot far more than Grachev.

It's tough for me to vote for Grachev based on his progress the last couple of years. I was willing to give him a pass last year for his low numbers, but he doesn't seem to be improving in regards to offense. I'm not down on him entirely, but I'm really starting to wonder if he can develop into the player we all hoped he'd become (top 6 power-forward)

I voted Thomas last round, and I'm sticking with him. All that he has going against him is size, he has everything that I look for in a prospect. I think that Clark pulled another gem with that selection.

He's just stating his case for certain players. Nothing wrong with that.

Grachev, add Kundratek.

I wrote what I wrote in the comments section. I didn't write it in the OP.

I have the same right to support any player I want in the comments section so long as OP stays 100% neutral.

This seems like shiny new toy syndrome to me. He's scoring a lot, yes, and that's great, but if he fails to light it up again next year wherever he ends up, will you pick whoever is scoring over him in the rankings just because he has a down year? Would you stand behind your choice if Grachev breaks out at some point this season or next?

Grachev has definitely fallen off due to some disappointing stints in the AHL, and I agree completely about Thomas doing more with less, but I can't pencil him in higher than Grachev yet without feeling guilty of being fascinated by the numbers. Had he made the Canadian WJC, and made some waves there, I would be more willing to consider him over Grachev. Not to mention, Thomas is a very underwhelming 5'9" while Grachev is 6'4".

It could also be the anti-shiny new toy syndrome. We gave Grachev a break last year. However, this year he should produce more than an AHL third liner.

If Thomas goes to the AHL and spends two years as an average-to-below-average minor leaguer, his stock would have to drop. But nothing suggests to me that he would do that.

If Grachev were, we would not want him even on the AHL roster - that's how bad his play has been so far. Some people say he picked up the last week or so, which I haven't seen Hartford in that week, but one good week does not make up for 1.5 years of terrible hockey.

I am not suggesting we dump him, I am not suggesting we treat him the same as a 27-year-old AHL scrub, but let's face it, suggesting that Grachev is a future first liner seems a little ridiculous at this point. People are just hoping he can make a career for himself as a nice third line player.

Being a "maybe third liner" does not equal being better than a 100-point scorer in juniors.

Isn't Thomas stuck in juniors for next year too? He'll be 19 at the start of next season. I'm pretty sure that he won't be allowed to go to the AHL since he came up through the CHL.

Grachev. He has already played 6 NHL games - without making himself to shame at all imo. He will be an NHL:er one day. Maybe sooner than later. Thomas looks good statistically so far - and let us hope that both these guys succede in our organisation one day!

Went with Grachev. Still think he can put it all together, just going to take a bit longer then usual.

Add V-Tank.

On a side note, I can't believe some of the prospects that are not up for voting yet. Not saying the prospects up there are not worth being up for voting already, but speak volume's of how deep the Rangers system is. Very happy with this teams future.

I agree that it's pretty unbelievable that a guys Tank and Kundratek is not up there for a vote and likely won't be in the top 10-12. But that speaks to our depth more than a mistake.

What makes it more remarkable is that we have been adding several rookies every season for years.
