I expected this because he's an exceptional 4th liner and cheap. Question is, what will happen with Weber? I thought the team was going to deal with Weber first?
I'm actually a little surprised, I thought with the emergence of Spaling that it was the end of the line for Smithson. For the money, I'm okay with the signing.
Seeing this leads to my question: Who's going to be the centers for next year? (Lombardi, Legwand, Goc if signed, O'Reilly, Smithson, Spaling.)Here's what I got so far on the roster with the rumored 3 mil bump in salary cap and my best projections for the signings.

With the above there is still two more forwards to sign, Weber at 6.5 million, Goc re-signed, SK, re-signed and 14.3 million left under the main salary cap and 4.3 million left under the mid point.
Its the right price and Smithson is a team guy. He will continue to help our faceoffs and PK so Im ok with it. I was expecting him to be gone with the emergence of Spaling, but I think it will be Joel Ward who is the odd man out.
Great price for a guy that can play just about anywhere on the ice. He was playing defense last night covering for Franson. He's not going to score a lot of points for us, but he keeps a lot of points from being scored against us.
The baby faced assassin can play center or wing, so he is definitely a valuable commodity to this team and worth an $800k hit for 2 years. I agree that Wardo my get to walk as I think Goc provides a different skillset the team does NOT have an abundance of, and Marcel seems happy here.
Im not seeing that on the twitter link you posted. Is this confirmed elsewhere?
in any case, if true its a case of poile taking the brid in the hand. he knows what he's getting from smithson and if Smitty is willing to take 800k then its a smart play. i was expecting smithson to test the market and look for a Fiddler-esque salary, but if he's happy then we dont have to gamble on a younger guy.
I suspect this means if Spaling stays consistent then Ward is gone and Spaling gets his slot.
It also could mean Poile expects Goc to command more than we can afford on the open market.
i would think the centers will be lombardi, legwand, goc, and smithson. with spaling and wilson capable backups when injuries happen.
as in, bye bye cal
These are both unknowns, especially Lombardi. It's his 2nd concussion that has caused him to miss 10 months for the first one and who knows how long for the current injury. If he comes back, his next bonk on the head would probably be career ending. If he comes back in a Preds sweater, I'll cringe every time he's checked.
This team will finally take the next step when we are able to replace guys like Smithson with guys who have just as much defensive game but are also able to contribute offensively.

smitty is not the guy we need to have more O. best case scenario we get a guy who can score 10-12 instead of smittys usual 5 -8. would be nice but not dramatically better.
what we need are the third line guys to chip in 15 instead of 10 and the second line to score 20 instead of 15 and the top liners to score 25 instead of 20.

I think assuming Goc will be here next year cannot be taken for granted. he is playing his way into a higher paid, multi year deal that we may not be able to afford.
Goc is likely gonna be looking for at least Ward/Fiddler money and multiple years.
I like the signing. Likely means that Ward is gone after the year, but Smithson has shown great versatility the past few years and does a tremendous job as a checking line forward. Sure, he's likely our worst offensive player among our regulars, but that's why he's not making the big bucks. Smithson knows his role and gets that job done on a nightly basis...

thanks for the link.
do you think Im right about Goc probably looking for several years at 1-1.5 million in the offseason?

Yeah, I can definitely see that and I can also see him sticking here for that amount on what would be a very tradeable contract if needed. We still don't know what we have with Lombardi or O'Reilly. Spaling and Geoffrion are more defensive guys still, but I think one of our greatest assets is the versatility of most of our centers to play on the wing. Also gotta factor in where Wilson fits, but starting with Goc and Legwand up the middle and building from there doesn't sound too bad to me...

what teams have a 4th line, veteren grinder that produces much more at 800k?

Sheesh, our RWs are waaay more expensive than our centers or LWs. Never noticed that before.
