I just think we need to settle down a little. I have still yet to see this team actually beat many top teams. They have beat Pittsburgh a couple of times, and they beat Washington when everybody was beating Washington. If they find a way to win tonight then maybe we can start thinking we are moving forward nicely, but for now let's keep the underdog blue collar role, it fits NY nicely.
I still think they are a fringe playoff team but hockey is the only major sport where bottom seed teams advance far on a regular basis, so I don't think that the "anything can happen" talk can be dismissed out of hand.

As posted earlier did anyone really think the Phlyers would go to the Finals last year after beating us in a SO to get in? It's all about a hot goalie and the right match-up, the Flyers got favorable matchups against low scoring teams Devils #19, Boston #30 and Montreal #26.

I don't expect the Rangers to go to the Finals but they could exceed my 1 round expectations, they do play "playoff" style hockey but I'm not betting the house on it.

Another couple of drafts like that and top-end talent won't be a problem.

I think that after the tremendous 2008 draft, along with guys like Anisimov, Hagelin, Sauer, Callahan, Dubinsky, etc., Slats kind of realized that the team won't have a lot of problems with depth anymore, and swung for the fences with guys like Kreider and Thomas.

I'm really hoping this trend will continue. He has even less reason to draft "safe" prospects now than ever before.
That's assuming they pan out. The team, as constructed, is just starved for scoring.

I feel as though if we can get one more good goal scorer this team can make some noise. As presently constituted I don't know how many goals this team is capable of scoring in a very defensive game like a playoff game is. I think as BB said, we may be one sniper, and one more vet D-man away from making some kind of noise.

Regardless of when the worst part of the suck came on exactly, has he looked like the same player at all this year? I haven't seen the same style of hockey that he specifically played last year one time yet this season.

They are now for the past 7 games. In the previous 37 they seemed consistent.

I totally agree which is why my expectations are 1 round for this team, which would not disappoint me unless they **** it up. I also wold not be surprised if they stole a round or two, I did watch the 79 clincher against the Isle at the Felt Forum...so I'm sometimes an optimist

Don LaGreca, an admitted devils fan baiting us because of the devils suckage this year.

I think we could potentially give a first round opponent a hard time, maybe even win that first round. Beyond that?

If the Rangers could add:

Ryan Clowe - 2nd & Brian Boyle
Kevin Bieska - rights to Pashnin & Horak
Justin Willians - Jeremey Williams & 3rd

would go a long way into making us an contender

I don't think we're going to challenge for the cup this year maybe just be a rough patch for some of the real contenders, but the team is certainly built for the future - then we can challenge for the cup.

LaGreca needs to suck up to the Rangers because he works for 1050 ESPN Radio and calls Rangers games in Kenny Albert's absence.

Get everyone healthy and add a vet puck mover like Kaberle or Pitkanen and I'll like this team's chances better to make a run. As assembled now, this team would get destroyed in the conference semifinals by Philly or Pittsburgh at best.

I think Boyle is another guy (like Dubinsky) who should move over to the left wing. Maybe not right now because his line with Prust and Feds is probably the team's best, but in the future.

Yes, cause these teams, all in races themselves are going to give up somewhat vital pieces of their teams for unknown picks, prospects, and a career minor leaguer?

1. Younger players need more seasoning

2. A number 1 Center

3. Another shut down D-man to go with Staal

Those things happen, then the Rangers will be cup contenders.

That's Girardi.

You mean behind Staal, right?

L.A. could probably use him (Justin) in the playoffs for extra scoring. They would want more. Possibly a higher draft pick but I would say no to that.

Kevin Bieska - rights to Pashnin & Horak

If he could stay in the line up, that's a deal I'd make. But I don't think the Canucks would. Right now they are a Cup contender and Bieska plays an important role. Pashnin & Horak may be good players in the future but, the future is now for Vancouver.

Unless there is a current void on the Canucks roster and the Rangers could fulfill that need, than maybe.

Ryan Clowe - 2nd & Brian Boyle

Put Anisimov between Clowe and Prust and it might end up being a new and improved version of "The Line," similar (only difference being the absence of Shelley) to last years. Unfortunately, the one (potentially) serviceable player available from S.J. is most likely Setoguchi.

The other thing is that I'm not so sure I'd want to give up on Boyle yet. In a multiplayer deal, if they happened to make Couture or Murray available, I'm all ears...

Not sure if I'm missing something because of the reactions in this thread, but isn't this the thing nhl.com has been doing for every team? I'm pretty sure they started this, "Why every team in the NHL has a chance at the Cup" thing a while ago.

I don't know how many of you know this, but NHL.com is doing this for EVERY team in the league...

As for us, I think we will be a legitimate contender in about 2 years, but I think unless the defense improves drastically, our window will be while Henrik is in his prime. I don't think we can get any other goalie anytime soon that would be able to carry the load he does.
