Stefanovich couldn't even make an impact on the Marlies. He was a boom or bust pick, and has enough potential to play top-6. Doubt he ever sees an NHL game.

I like this trade for the Leafs, we get a player who we can call up from the Marlies if need be (and considering we have Crabb on our Kessel line... that will likely be sooner rather than later).

Brunnstrom was eventually going to be traded. It was only a matter of time. Solid move by the Leafs. Its a win-win situation for them. If he doesn't work out, they can cut him lose in the summer.

Not sure why so much is being read into this trade. Burke was interviewed during the 1st intermission of the Leafs v Coyotes game and the gist of his comments on this trade were as follows:

(i) They plan on having Brunnstrom play for the Marlies due to all the injuries there. As far as actually playing for the Leafs, he would only say he gave them an option if there was also a bunch of Leaf injuries to forwards later in the season but that their prime view was he was acquired to help the Marlies.
(ii) He also made it sound like he wanted the expiring contract having mentioned Stafanovich still has one year left on his contract while Brunnstrom will be a FA this summer so they would open a spot for other players. Those comments made it sound like Basketball where an expiring contract is viewed as a bonus. I guess unless Brunnstrom really impresses he'll be outta T.O. in 6 months anyway.

They may not be paying him but he is under contract therefore goes against the 50 player limit for contracts.

Bold part: We actually agree on something.

I usually have good instincts for sarcasm. Mind you, you could have been right.

But as you can see from javier's subsequent posts, he actually was serious and simply being a revisionist.

You and I know that the kid was considered a very good prospect.

All of this being said, I feel that there's more of a possible upside for the Leafs in that not-great trade.

Whatever bro, I ask you find at least a NHL pre-season game thread where fans were trumping up the future of Stefanovich and you couldnt find one could you? If fans cant even hype up a kid in a preseason game what does that tell you?

He's still taking up a contract spot this year and next. The Leafs don't want him. This gives them Marlies depth for the season and a contract spot for the summer. The Leafs don't care about a few hundred K, they piss that.

This.

He is like so many other prospects....NHL tools and an ECHL tool box...Teams always shy away from these high skill European kids who specialize in disappearing acts when the team needs them.

If Stef could ever put it all together on a consistent basis, he could have a shot......but as of now, he is highly unlikely to ever sniff the big show.

Brunnstrom will likely be among the first call ups at left with with Caputi and Mueller. Good depth move by Burke.

Good friends with Gustavsson, maybe Burke hoping for a spark from one, or both of them.

A problem? Really? Exactly what "problems" did Brunnstrom cause in Dallas?

He's a decent, skilled, scoring winger. With the outstanding wingers that Dallas already had, there was no chance of him playing in a suitable role.

Decent debut for Brunnstrom had 2 assists and was a +2 in a 3-2 loss against Abbotsford.

You guys are acting as if the guys playing days are over. He's 25 years old and Dallas barely gave him any ice time, 10-11 minutes a game when it was clear he was coming over to put up points, not play third/fourth line minutes.

I was a Fabrian Brunnstrom apologist, but he was given a chance in Dallas. GM Joe has said several times Benn was not supposed to play in the NHL last year. The plan was for him to always go to the AHL. Bruno was penciled in on the 2nd line with Ribs. He started the pre-season of 09-10 with Morrow and Ribs, and Jamie Benn out played him .... by a longshot.

That stupid handshake agreement (that Les Jackson publicly spoke about) to not send him to the minors is what killed his career in Dallas.

I still believe he could be a NHLer in a Top 6 role or he could become a PP specialist, but I'm glad he's not in Dallas anymore. He was never going to fit into GM Joe's team concept, and he'd never overtake Eriksson, Benn, or Neal.

the kid came in with a lot of hype and on paper he looked like a solid top 6 fw---the game is not played on paper. dallas over paid for him and after half a season the league figured the kid and he has been nothing but a vacant roster spot since

You clearly aren't familiar with ELCs. Dallas paid him $875K for 2 seasons. Every other dime of that contract was a bonus he never met. They paid him under $400K before trading him this season.

They gave up no assets to give a guy a shot in the NHL who they (and several other teams) felt he could potentially have a future in North America. They lost absolutely nothing, and it's utterly impossible for anyone to say they overpaid for him.

You mean...

- Brunnstrom starts off with the marlies getting first line minutes, racks in a whopping 20 pts in his 1st 15 games
- Called up to replace Joey Crabb on the 1st line
- Finishes the season with 30 goals, surpassing Grabovski, Kulemin, and MacArthur in total points
- Bozak/Brunnstrom/Kessel have developed a chemistry that cant be controlled
- Leafs win 12 straight, take Atlanta's spot as 8th in the eastern conference.
- 1st go the pens, then the caps, then the flyers (predominantly doing what Montreal couldnt do).
- Meet LA in the stanley cup,
- During game 6, Gretzky high sticks Gilmour in the face BUT gets the 5 minute major cuz of the blood...
- Gilmour scores 2 on the powerplay
- Leafs win the Cup
- Brunnstrom gets MVP, resigns cheap 3 yr, 2 mil per.
- A dynasty is born!

Yeah thats my bad. I thought it was sarcasm, apparently he actually believes that.

Stefanovich receive amazing amounts of hype during his last CHL season. He even had his own thread.

Wasn't the Stefanovich hype about 2 years ago before his overage season? He looked like a hell of a prospect then, but looked terrible in camp for the Leafs and Marlies.
