I've seen the speculation about Phillips but don't know much about him, would he be a fit? what kind of player is he?

20-25 minute/game mobile PMD, defensive dman (very good defensively, don't mind the bad +/- this year, he's on a bad team)

If the Sharks were to trade for Phillips I wouldn't be cool with a high pick or prospect being used to acquire him. He's just, mediocre. I prefer Kaberle.

He is not a PMD. That is part of Ottawa's problem. He is a shutdown, nearly on a level with Regehr. A PMD with as little PP time as Phillips will still put up 20 assists a year. He doesn't do that.

BTW, this is Garrioch who tends to pull stuff out of the air with a perspective of what Ottawa wants and very little perspective of the other team.

Chris Phillips? I'd rather the cup winning goal be scored on the other team's net.

Agreed, he is definitely not a puck moving defenseman. He put up average point totals and a great +/- earlier in his career because the Senators were so good on offense. Now, they suck, and Phillips is suffering.

He does have a NTC though.

I think Phillips would be a good addition in a shut down role. Probally just a rental as he loves the Ottawa area and probally would not sign with the sharks.

I've always thought Kaberle would be a good fit also, more of a puck moving D for the 2nd pairing and PP QB. Another player that won't re-sign for a west coast team and may not waive his NTC for teal anyway.

As rentals i'd take either or both - only if we don't have to give up to much for them.

Hows this..

Boyle-Murray
Philips-Kaberle
Vlasic-Demers
Huskins

Much better than what we have now!

Haven't posted since the summer due to international travels but man is it nice to be back. Anyways.

So you are suggesting we trade away future assets for 25 game rentals who won't resign in a season where we might not even make the playoffs, nevertheless have a decent chance at making a run for the cup...? IMO no rental trade we make this year will be a good one and we are better off regrouping in the off season.

Welcome back!

I'm suggesting that yes i'd make the deal *only* if we did not have to give up high end players, prospects or picks. There is still time to make a playoff push with a re-tooled D, DW better not be giving up w/o trying. Clearly DW needs to do something as the players and coaching staff don't appear to be able to get the team in the post season at this point.

There is a good chance that these players will cost to much and deals will not be made for them for this reason. I agree that it's possible that we'll to do a off season "regroup" as you suggest.

Phillips is Heatley's buddy right? Seems like that's the only base for this.

My biggest problem with our defense is our 1st pair. Murray just isnt a good enough partner for Boyle. Vlasic and Demers have been playing great hockey lately and neither of them should be pushed to the 3rd pairing if we get a defenseman.

I think the defense should eventually look like this:

New guy-Boyle
Vlasic-Demers
Murray-Huskins
Wallin

I remember Karpotsev (sp?) when he was on the Blackhawks turned around and tried to send a slapper behind the net, except it went in the net and was a goal for Scott Thornton.

I believe Marleau got pressured by Sandis Ozolinsh when he was a duck and put it in behind Nabby in OT.

I remember the Hawks incident. If I remember correctly, he got hurt in that play too.

This must be the video DW used to research Wallin before trading a 2nd for him and giving him 2.5

I believe you're right. I think Scott Thornton checked him as he was attempting to make the clear.

There was a goal similar to that against Chicago maybe 5 years ago, Marleau was credited with the goal after a faceoff.
