Howlings: Del Zotto Speaks

Mitch Beck from Howlings has a candid interview with Michael Del Zotto for the first time since he was sent down by the New York Rangers a couple of weeks ago after he and the rest of the Connecticut Whale had just knocked off the WBS Penguins, the first place team overall in the AHL, with a terrific 6-3 win at the XL Center.

DEL ZOTTO SPEAKS...

All good responses but it'll be tough to see how he ends up getting back up here if at all the rest of the year. If McD stays solid in that 3rd pairing on the left side and obviously Staalzy isn't going anywhere, he needs a bad game from basically eminger or gilroy for a bit of a stretch to get his chance back up here..

Staal - Girardi
Eminger - Sauer
McD - Gilroy

DZ only plays that left side so either way it'll be interesting how this all shakes out in 40 or so days and we see what we have for the playoff run..

Well he's saying all the right things, now let's see if he can improve on his game. I think he knows that in the long run, this is what's best him and the team.

Sounds like he's keeping a good attitude and refreshing to hear that Redden is trying to help that.

He has 4 assists in 6 games, no? Hopefully he can keep that going. I'd really love to see him come back up at one point.

Since I haven't been watching as much hockey this season due to university stuff piling on my head, who was he usually paired with before he was sent down?

Mostly Rozsival, although he saw time with Girardi early in the season.

it's not really about the points. It's about the defense. His was atrocious. His +/- hasn't been great, over there.

Best scenario would probably be:

Staal - Girardi
Del Zotto - Sauer
McDonagh - Eminger/Gilroy

If MDZ can come back and play a solid NHL game. We'll see what happens. Part of me can't see him staying in the AHL all year, but part of me can't see him cracking the lineup until his defense is at least better than Gilroy's has been.

I absolutely agree. Sauer has been so defensively solid that he can help cover for Del Zotto's (hopefully lessened) defensive shortcomings. Gilroy, despite having a few good games, is still the odd man out in my mind.

Nothing against Rozsival, since he was quite solid, but wasn't that slightly the problem as well? I think he'd be better off with someone like Sauer who is a lot more defensive. I haven't been able to watch him in the AHL so apart from the stats I have no idea how he's doing there.

yeah but Eminger is a righty so he really should be playing the other side.

Staal - Girardi
MDZ - Sauer
McD - Eminger

Oh I know he is but thats why this year they've been putting both Gilroy and Eminger over on the left side at various times..Its just eminger does it better than Gilroy..

One way of the other, he'll be back in the NHL by the trade deadline.

What does Gilroy and a 2nd rounder get us? I guess we'd have to throw in Eminger too assuming a veteran D is coming back. Either that or Eminger sits when MDZ gets back.

There is no way Eminger sits over Gilroy.

I don't know about sits, but this team is pretty good yet struggles to score. They may just wait and see if it works itself out when Christ and Cally get back but it's not like either of those two are the glaring hole here imo. Sather surly is looking around. Is MDZ in Hartford to distance him from the core so it will sting less or to give other players time to build their trade value?

I think he's ultimately there because he needed it and Gilroy/Sauer out played him for his spot. But I wont be surprised if he is

a. traded

b. called up after the other guys get traded

If he's traded, which I personally don't see happening (but what do I know) there better be a (relatively young) good puck moving D coming back. If MDZ is out we are pretty offensively challenged on the back end. Unless the team has no faith he's going to put his game together I have to believe both Gilroy and Eminger are more expendable than he is.

I agree. Its too soon to to bail on MDZ. He's very young and he does have great skill. Skills this team needs. Wouldn't surprise me if he came back VERY determined not to taste the food in Hartford ever again. This stint could be very important for his development.

That said, you have to give to get right? Sather has been really good with trades but the quality of skill the Rangers truly need to add to the top 6 is going to cost.

I really like this team, but there's not enough finish. I guess if Gabby starts lighting it up it won't seem so bad, but .... yea... Dubi and Brian Boyle are our leading goal scorers.
