No shock, but odd that they'd inform them of that during the season.

I was thinking the same thing.... very odd.

I wonder now, that the cat is out of the bag, they try to move him for anything? Possibly to his 'new' team.

That's my thought as well. What better way to demotivate a player than this?

Well done.

I wonder if he'll be waived before the season is over.

There has got to be a trade coming then. I'm sad. I enjoy watching Zherdev all the time, it's really a shame.

Although this is completely predictable, this is possibly the worst way to handle it.

The only logical reason for this would be if the agent was giving demands such as "we need a contract offer before end of season or Nic will test UFA" and the Flyers said something like "OK - go fish". I don't think they called the agent and said, "Hows it going. Just wanted to call you to let you know we are not signing Zherdev next year. Have a good day."

So agent pushed Flyers hard for a contract offer and they said not as this time. Agent makes a big deal on twitter, fans think it was a stupid move by Flyers and thus puts pressure on Flyers to re-sign him. Just a bunch of posturing IMO.

stupid move, demoralizing him while he's still playing. Philly's management is so stupid sometimes. Wanna move him next year, move him! But keep your dumb f%^^ trap shut til then!

I will not argue or debate this all over again, but it'd be a mark of tremendous stupidity to move Z before next year. He makes 2 mil and for that money Philly will NOT get anyone, whether forward or Dman or goalie, who's any good. And they cant afford to tack 1 mil onto Z's 2 mil and get a 3 mil guy, not with their cap situation.

If Z gets traded, Philly will not win the Cup. Not cuz Zherdev himself is necessarily so key, more cuz it's a stupid move .... and hockey Gods penalize stupid moves .... even stupid moves involving non core third line players like Z.

Even if agent did that, it'd suffice to tell agent we wont talk til after season is over. Not necessary to tell him Philly has no intention of signing him ... just say we'll talk later.

To be clear, I believe Z should not be signed next year cuz there are bigger priorities like Leino... but I'm not a fan of either moving him before next year or of spilling the beans and telling him that Philly wont sign him next year.

Even if his agent acts like a jackass and pisses management off by obnoxiously demanding an answer, Philly management should keep their cool and just stick to their guns and say we cant make any decision til the off season. Just cuz someone pushes ur buttons doesnt mean u have to jump on command like a trained monkey.

True. I was kinda looking at it as a gesture of kindness. I mean if Zherdev wants to stay in the NHL next year, this will allow him a lot of time to decide what teams he would like to go to. Also gives other teams the knowledge that he will be available, thus they can offer him rather then lets say a less skilled player. This could be Philadelphia not leaving him out to dry at the end of the year. If I was Zherdev, I'd rather them tell me in January then surprise me after the playoffs.

Well that seems more respectable.

That looks more like Z and his agent are telling other teams, consider me an option before you sign other players to extensions. Without actually negotiating with other teams before July 1st.

http://phillysportsdaily.com/flyers/...kolay-zherdev/

Quote:
VOORHEES, N.J. – General manager Paul Holmgren and the Flyers’ front office have a plan for who they’d like to have back next season.

It’s likely that plan includes Ville Leino, but it reportedly doesn’t include Nikolay Zherdev. According to Broad Street Hockey’s Teemu H., the Flyers informed Zherdev’s agent, Jay Grossman, that they will not be re-signing him after this season.

“We’ll find a new team for Nikolay after the season,” There are no serious offers right now. But the season isn’t over yet.”

That it came out now is surprising, but it’s certainly not shocking that Zherdev won’t be back. He has bounced in and out of the lineup and has been a healthy scratch a handful of times this year. Zherdev has 14 goals and three assists in 38 games, though he did miss some time with a lower-body injury.

Coach Peter Laviolette said it’s taking time for Zherdev to get back up to speed after that injury but had some good things to say about the Russian winger.

“He’s gotta continue to push the speed and his timing out there,” Laviolette said. “I think he brings something to that line – his skill level with Mike [Richards], I think there seems to be a little bit of chemistry there.”
There is an updated article within post #31 with quotes from agent.

agreed, why would he care how he plays from now on

yet if he thinks long term, play strong, especially in the playoffs and hit it up as a free agent

It's incredible how these stories become mangled without the proper channels. If the agent means no serious offers from the Flyers, that is one thing.

For what it's worth, the team also told Hartnell that he'd be getting traded before he decided to become a hockey player before last playoffs.

Though, I don't see the same situation happening. They'll need his capspace. It's a gamble but this might also light a fire under his ass.

I think he signed the contract knowing or even hoping to test UFA after a year. He wants to show the NHL he deserves to get paid, but obviously he hasn't magically become more of a two-way player as he claimed he did, and therefore hasn't been a great fit for the Flyers.

I don't think this will really motivate or de-motivate Zherdev, but letting this type of news come out now is very unlike the Flyers, and doesn't make sense.
