I would be all over a Neal for Omark + trade, depending on what the + is. Omark and Smid for Neal and a pick perhaps (4th rounder?). I like both Omark and Smid, but Neal would be a long term power forward. Having him on our squad would allow us to shop Penner for help on the blueline, an upgrade on Smid.

or we keep Penner so the Oilers aren't soo soft.

Penner-Hall-Hemsky
Neal-Gagner-Eberle

or

Penner-Gagner-Hemsky
Neal-Hall-Eberle ---> imagine that line in 5 years, WOW!

you know what I mean, hoping Hall stays center haha nothing against Horcoff.

Whitney is injured, and it's close enough when he isn't that this sort of comment probably isn't necessary.

So while Neal>Gilbert, trading their best defenseman for another LW doesn't really sound like the kind of move the Oilers would be interested in.
If Neal was offered for Gilbert I think the Oilers would have to do it anyway regardless of LW depth. Then they can flip one of their LWers for someone with a much more palatable contract than Gilbert.

I wish...big fan of Neal, not a fan of Gilbert even though his play has been improving at a slow pace

It wouldn't be a bad thing, but we have enough issues on the blueline without dishing Smid for a player who isn't a d-man, or at least with the plan to get a top 4 d-man in exchange for him. Plus, in two years PRV will be ready for top 6 play I am sure.

Paajarvi will be but it would be nice to aquire Jamie Benn or James Neal as Edmonton's future top 6 are all going to be soft minus Penner, so another power forward in the line would benefit Edmonton.

Gilbert is a big bucket of meh; I've never been impressed with him. Injury aside (which I was well aware of) Whitney seems to have finally figured things out. IMO the difference is substantial thus my sarcastic remark, which you should probably learn to take for what it is.

Neal > Gilbert... but neither team does this.

Edmonton's defense is horrible enough as it is. They've got tons of cap space, but the free agent market is going to suck balls next year... so we can't really replace Gilbert.

With Strudwick and Vandemeer going away and Petry and Peckham turning into full time players, we're getting a bit of an upgrade.... but we've got nothing to replace Gilbert at this point in time.

As an Oilers fan, all I can say is I'm impressed with Stars fans for resisting the urge to verbally lambaste the OP. This trade reeks. If James Neal had a quadrapalegic brother who the Stars owned the rights to, they'd still hesitate to pull the trigger on a swap of him for Gilbert.

Would love Neal on the Oilers, guessing it would take something we wouldn't want to give up.

I <3 Neal, actually I <3 most of the Stars. Therefore would love to have him, but to even get them thinking you have to put Whitney to base it around.
