Yep, you're right. Instead we'll hope he doesn't sign a new contract, and we can persue him July 1st with the hope of acquiring him for nothing.

Of course they are going to hold on to him.

As to where he ends up next year; if the habs don't try to resign Markov, they would be able to afford Richards and get the "real" top six forward they've been looking for.

Maybe wishful thinking but him and Cammy could be deadly together.

Oh cool he'll just leave the Stars in the offseason when they refuse to pay him then.

Of course he won't be traded, his team is currently in a position to make a run for the Stanley Cup..

What isn't said in this thread however is that Brad Richards can sign with any team come July 1st.

No way, is that how UFA works?

Just thought I'd add this little tidbit from Richards during tonight's post game show:

So Dallas will be buyers at deadline? Makes zero sense if Dallas has no intention of paying him in the offseason, why not get something for him while his value is at its peak? Unless they really intend on signing him..?
Winning used to mean something.

If he's a free agent, there will be 3-4 realistic suitors (NYR, LAK) and probably 1-2 small market teams that have cap space to spend that will try and lure him so that they can make a PR splash, likely to no avail. And the Leafs, who only have a shot if they wildly overpay him.

Dallas is willing to pay him. That's not the hold up right now. The point is Brad wants to see how his team preforms in the playoffs. He doesn't want to sign long term with a team that folds like a cheap suit in the second season. Second, without an owner he wants Niewendyk to prove somehow that Dallas is serious about winning moving forward. Unfortunately that cannot be proven until a new owner comes aboard and starts spending money.

No one here knows what he's going to do and I'm not even sure at this point Richards knows what he's going to do but it seems fairly obvious that he'll be here till this summer and that Joe will offer him a new deal before July 1st. Whether he chooses to accept that is entirely debatable.
