Mark Streit Skating Again

Some good news...

Quote:
A pleasant sight for supporters of the New York Islanders: Veteran defenseman Mark Streit was spotted skating with Kyle Okposo and Frans Nielsen on Monday morning, as reported by the official twitter account of the Islanders.

Streit underwent preseason shoulder surgery and was expected to miss up to six months. Perhaps five months will be enough? If so, we could see Streit back in action for the Isles by the start of March.

Good for him, but it's still a shoulder injury rather than a lower body injury. Still happy to see him, though.

I'm sure he's sporting the yellow jersey, but if he's skating now, I would think it's possible we could see him in mid-to-late February. Maybe I'm being over-optimistic, but we'll see.

Very true, next big milestone will be when he's cleared for contact, but I can't imagine he'd even be skating now if he wasn't at least 'close' to contact clearance (2-3 weeks?).

i got the chills when I read this.....Quick question....I know its probably not that close but if and when streit comes back do you continue to roll AMAC and the Hammer on the top pair.......I think you let striet play less min than he is used too but you still let him QB the PP.....just to ease him back in...Plus we are not likley to make the playoffs...so why let him kill him self out there........

Assuming he plays, I'm sure they ease him back into the rotation, let him get his legs and lungs back (maybe even a short conditioning stint at the Bridge). Doubt we'll be anywhere near playoff contention so it'll all depend on how many remaining games. If he comes back in late Feb, I'm sure you see him log top minutes by mid-March or so. He's a professional athlete, he'll want to be out there and playing as much as possible.

i just dont even get why they would bother getting him back in 5 months. just give him the entire season off, let him get his shoulder 100% healed, lets get him back into next season completely healed. i just cant take it if he gets hurt again in the last month..ish of games..

It's hard enough keeping guys who are hurt out of a game, try keeping an healthy hockey player out of the lineup.

It would be pretty dumb to keep our best player out of the lineup if he was healthy, no?

We have to try to win games, and I'm sure Streit wants to play as well.

Not to sound like an a-hole, but he is not your son, he is an athlete. He knows the risks of playing a professional sport.

Good news to hear Streit is skating, but yes, we'll wait to get excited until he's allowed full contact practices.

I don't know about you lot, but while having Streit and Okposo out this year has been a blow, Streit hurts more to me just because of the simple age factor. You hate to see a very good player, arguably the best on the team, lose nearly an entire year in his prime like this. Okposo has (hopefully) many years, including his best years, ahead of him.

Just another frustrating part to a frustrating year, I suppose.

After watching today's game, we can only hope Streit comes back ASAP.

Yep.... In another thread I mentioned that even a 20-15-3 record in the last 38 games (which would be MARKED improvement for this team and is i.e. almost inconceivable) would only give us 78 points on the season, having us likely finishing 10-16 points out of the 8th playoff spot.

As for Streit, I'm sure he'll play 15-30 games and then represent Switzerland at the WC in Slovakia.

He's a competitor and although I believe they'll work him in slowly, he's not gonna take the whole season off 'just to be on the safe side in light of our NO SHOT at the playoffs' situation.

That just doesn't fit his player description.

Although I wouldn't put it past Snow and co. to have a number of our players just call it a year. It seems like a number of guys have stayed on the IR rather than suit up for 'meaningless' games over the past few seasons.

I'd argue since July 2nd. I really would.

Knew at that point we would not compete.
