Arnott to WSH

Caps are in need of a 2C and definitely some veteran leadership in the locker room. What would it take for the Caps to pull him away from the Devils at the deadline?

I'd love to see Mathieu Perreault or Karl Alzner in New Jersey but I doubt the Caps trade either for a rental.

2nd round pick + average prospect would be the standard going rate, 1st rounder if there's a bidding war.

karl alzner? i guess it hasnt hit the news yet that alzner is the caps first choice shutdown defenseman. i doubt the caps would trade alzner for anyone offered for trade in the league this season.

perreault in nj? ya think lou has any desire for a small lightweight offensive quebec league type? arnott is the prototype nj devils center. perreault is the opposite of that.

caps have 4 or 5 nhl ready or near ready second tier prospects. three or four forwards with no room to advance to washington and a young d or two in the same spot. andrew gordon for jason arnott perhaps

No one said that. I just prefer captains that don't demand certain linemates, whine when they don't get them, and take entire stretches of games off. Arnott is a good player when he wants to be, I won't deny that...but good player and good leader are two different things. With WSH's recent playoff struggles, I'm not sure adding Arnott should be their first choice, if they're looking to fill the "gritty veteran leader" quota.

Arnott may not be a leader. But he's good in big games. See game 6 of the 2000 SCF.

In what world is a 36 year old UFA, on pace for about 35 points, worth a top defensive prospect?

He was worth a 2nd in the offseason, coming off a 46 point (in 63 games) season... I'm not sure you can convince me how his value has risen so high.

You guys had the same problem with Arnott that we had with Langenbrunner: a good player but one who had gotten too comfortable to be successful.

I suspect Perreault would be available for Arnott. I suspect Orlov would not be available for him. I'm very confident that the Caps won't trade Alzner or Carlson, period. The Caps have no 2011 second rounder.

Carlson is their number one defensive prospect and is basically untouchable it would take extreme overpayment for him.

Given that he's now got 75 games of NHL experience (including 7 in the playoffs) and has performed at a consistently high level, I wouldn't even really call him a prospect anymore. Semantics, I know, but it's pretty clear that he's an NHL player with tremendous upside.

Carlson goes nowhere.

he's better than Greene, younger than Greene, cheaper than Greene, and not about to be a UFA. Alzner and Carlson are the Caps' shutdown pair, and aren't going anywhere.

The obvious compensation for Arnott is a 2nd rounder. But since the Caps don't have one, it gets a little tricky. I suppose the Caps could work to acquire one. Or the Devils could accept the 2012 2nd rounder. Otherwise, you're talking a 3rd rounder + a 2nd tier prospect.

3rd rounder + Francois Bouchard or something like that.
