The part above it is theoretically easily avoided. A GM simply has a little meeting with the player and his agent, discusses the desire to have the player stay long-term and that once they roughly agree on what a future contract would look like, the GM lets the player know that there's a possible deal for him where he'd go to a contender and the team would get assets in return.
In other words, the GM asks the guy if he's willing to spend 2-3 months with a contender in order to get this team more assets and then resign with it at the theoretically agreed upon terms in the summer.
As long as all are in agreement, it's no problem. Shake hands and get on with it.
Obviously, if the player doesn't want to finish the season elsewhere, then the GM can't risk a trade if he really wants to keep the guy.
But true, there's never a legally stipulated guarantee that the guy will return and you're right: Even if they do come to a gentleman's agreement, the GM never knows if the player will find the new team and surroundings more to his liking.
you mean like what we did with Wiz no but seriously that would be awsome....Moulsonhas a chance at playoff expeirence and brings it back here and we get a Player/pick in return......PIT would love to have Moulson for crosbys wing.....But I wouldnt want to risk MM going and getting a taste of what a real organization is ran like....
no your not....I cant stand him....would of rather gave ullstrum a look to be honest.....I think everyone was just high off of the 2 goal game he had first coming up.....
He lso had another caLled back which shouldve counted the next game. He's played ok. A few penalties he got were just awful calls, but I don't think the others were soley due to his lack of ability to keep up. He was caught out of position, happens to every hockey player. Just magnified when its him cuz he's the sweetener
Am I the only one who doesn't care for Colliton? He's taking penalties because he can't keep up with the play.
Nope - You're not the only one. Nice guy, but not an NHL'er. When I see a post that calls for trading Konopka because we have Colliton, I know that person doesn't know what they're talking about.
We shouldn't be trading anyone because we have Colliton. In fact, we should be trading FOR players because we have Colliton.
Z will get back more than we'd think. Look at Yannick Perrault a few years back. The guy brought back a good return as a skinny, weak, face-off specialist.
Z can add grit, fight, hit, and is likely a tough playoff competitor who puts the team first.
I can see the Isles getting a late 3rd should 2 teams get into a bidding war for his services.

Couldn't agree more. Colliton only makes the NHL on a team lacking sufficient talent. Like say, the 2010-11 New York Islanders! He's what, 27 now? It was a nice story for him to score a pair with his folks in attendance after his call-up, but he's simply not a piece to any kind of team-building puzzle.
Anything (within reason) that gets us back Cory Schneider and/or Mason Raymond I'm in favor of. But those are the two young players the Canucks have that jump out to me. Konopka for a draft pick unless its a top 60 pick really doesnt do much for us.

It'd be a lot lot lot of adding to get back Schneider & Raymond. I doubt Gillis wants to do all of that since there's no reason to mess with a winning formula.
We just called up Sergei Shirokov from the minors and he's got good top 6 upside and he played a lot with Grabner so I could picture that move being made + a low pick
Take your top 10 under 20 kids and half should be expendable if it means we can make half better with better players for them. Take our entire roster minus JT and Moulson (they work well together and both can contribute) and find out who can get us a third wheel 1st liner. A CAPTAIN, even.
We have the kids....we have no one to help them.
If Konopka and Bailey get us a solid guy, in other words, you get him. Tavares is far too important to waste away due to Garth and Cholly's cluelessness. (and send Poulin down ASAP)
Z for Raymond should work if the Canucks want to... Screw picks
....no thanks
Why would we move our 2nd line winger who (okay he's having a slow year) has proven chemistry with just about all 4 lines and plays both our PP & PK for a 4th line C?

I don't care for him either and I would rather resign Konopka then trade him away. The last thing this team needs is another draft pick. We need players and signing Konopka would be a smart decision he plays his position fine and is great at faceoffs.
Now only if we could sign or get players that could play in a top 6 on real team would be great.
