2011 offseason tweaks?

I believe that

Carbomb
Z
O'D
Leighton

will not be back - looking at the list of UFA on capgeek I think the Flyers could benefit from players to fill the holes of those departures with (not all, just some names that could yeild results with our current lineup);

Antti Miettinen
Scotty Upshall <------- One could be had with Carbombs and Z contract fairly easily
Brooks Laich

Mark Stuart <--------------- If someone doesn't make the team better on bottom pairing with O'D

I know we still have to sign Leino, which will be first on the list in my mind. I do think tho, the players above, any which one, could deff help in the top 9 with our group.

Thoughts?

Resign Leino is step 1

Hartnell-Briere-Leino
JvR-Richards-Giroux
Nodl-Carter-xxx
Powe-Betts-Sheley

Unless I am missing someone, Upshall would fit in nicely there.

Pronger-Carle
Timonen-Coburn
Mez-xxxx

If no trades happen, then we need 1 d-man, and hopefully its not Walker. Bartulis is another option, but I would like to add another veteran like O'Donnel is OD does retire.

What about trading Carle? He just got his ass kicked.

I agree. Leino - step 1.

I think Upshall would like to be here as well, that would be my first choice of those I listed, but for the styles they play are similar and could mirror one another...

IF O'D does retire I threw out Stuart b/c he is HARD NOSED and smart. Much like O'D

We keep Leino, obviously. I want to see Wellwood or someone come up. Rather give us some cap space.

Plus, we have to figure out what will happen with Boucher as well.

Same with the defense. Big Sean O'Donnell retires, Walker probably stays (he'll take a full year to heal anyway), Bart stays. If things are moving, no need to mess with it.

We also need someone who will replace Betts, if I remember correctly.

We clear something like 4 million in cap space. If we need to sign someone, you sign that shutdown fourth line center, and call it a day.

If we win the Cup, then only minor tweaks.

If we lose in the playoffs then Homer will focus on one area of the team to scapegoat and then way overcompensate in that area to the detriment of draft picks, prospects, and longterm cap space.

Not to mention Bouch is a UFA.

So maybe we may be in the goalie market again.

I'm a Brooks Laich fan but I'd expect his cap hit to increase slightly. It just dawned to me that we'll still be flirting with the cap ceiling for a good 3-4 more years.

Walk-Boucher, Zherdev, Moore, Ryan
Re-sign-Leino, Legein, Kalinski, Powe, and Nodl.

Trade Carle for a good, cheap 3rd line two-way winger and maybe a pick depending upon the winger. Use the cap space to re-sign Leino.

Sign a veteran backup like Conklin to back up Bobrovsky.

Hartnell-Briere-Leino
JVR-Richards-Nodl
XXX-Carter-Giroux
Shelley-Betts-Powe

Pronger-Meszaros
Timonen-Coburn
Walker-Bartulis

Bobrovsky
UFA

But at this point, it's pure speculation. Ask me after the playoffs and I'll have a much better, more concrete answer.

No, he's signed next year still.

I'm looking at the list of goaltenders, man there isn't much of good backups available. We may be better off resigning Bouch.

Ditto.

I think Scottie is happy in PHX he's getting top line or close to top line minutes nightly.

Depends on the playoffs, but if it isn't adressed by the deadline, I'd like to see some size added to the forward group.

Has it been long enough since Homer was butt hurt by Biron wanting to rightfully be paid like a top 15 tender in the league after posting back to back > .91 SVPCT seasons behind a porous defense?

If so, I would LOVE to grab him to be a 1A/1B type of thing with Bob next season.

Maybe? I mean Biron did get rightfully paid these last few season right?

Every year this thread comes up midseason and every year I always wonder why the **** anyone insists on doing it when the season's not only still going on, but when we're in playoff position. Like, come on guys. Christ.

Biron got absolutely screwed by his agent who played hardball like a dumbass in a down goalie economy and had to sign on with the NYI for a fraction of what he was worth just to land a job.

He has since become assumed to be a backup goalie, that is the nature of NHL goalies. There are only 30 spots, so once you lose one it is tough to come back.

That doesn't take away the fact that he deserved the 3M his agent was playing hardball for 2 years ago and he would be amazing behind this current defense.

I agree, next year's team is incredibly foggy at this point, so many things can happen.

Sign Simon Gagne in the offseason?

If he doesn't turn it around I don't expect him to re-up with Tampa considering how things have gone for him since arriving there.

Would be awesome.

Then you should expect it and not cry about it

We are playing GM - as anyone who is actually in that position is actually doing... they think well in advance. As a fan I think I like this the most. Playing armchair GM.

If you don't want to play, then leave HAHA

There were reports at that time, were he wanted 3+ years at around 5mil/yr. A Theo type contract.

If he was that good, he would have earned the starting position, but instead he now makes even less with the Rags for 2 years, than last year.

I'm pretty glad we didn't sign him.

Even if he picks up a pace of 1PPG, he would finish the season with roughly 40-45pts. More realistically he will finish around 30-35 pts, maybe get 20goals.

What would you offer him and how long? Also would this not more than likely make signing Leino more difficult?

I would love Gagne back at about 3mil/yr for 2yrs.

really depends on what happends this year.

I think Z and Carcillo are gone. I assume OD will probably retire. Re-sign Nodl, Powe and Leino.

I would talk to Gagne and Knuble and see if they want to come back for cheap
