I didn't want to break it to you guys like this, but you deserve to know before it comes out in the media.
Crosby, Ovie and Stamkos have made a mutual decision to sign with Carolina to form a super team. They decided on Raleigh because it offers the right mix of nightlife, media exposure and hockey tradition.
The official announcement will be made during a 1-hour special on Versus.
Without a Soft Cap like the NBA and with the need to sign another 17 players and not just 7 or 8 like in the NBA and I would guess Carolina would want to keep Cole and Ward I am thinking they would have 15 AHLers on their team. Could 4 All-Star Forwards and a goalie win the Cup? No. But that would be a great line. Would be fun to see such an unbalanced team!
He's already won a Cup in Pittsburgh. He's tight with the ownership. The Pens would pay him the max if that's what he wants. There's basically zero reason for him to leave. Yeah, he had a favorite team growing up. Who doesn't? The Habs were Mario's favorite team growing up, but he didn't leave for them. He had a good thing in Pittsburgh and so does Crosby. Gretzky's favorite teams growing up were the Leafs and Wings, but he never played for either team.
I don't think you'll ever see a Canadian born star player (Crosby, Stamkos, Tavares etc) ever play out their contract to sign and play for their favourite childhood team.
Though I can see an American born star player doing it.
There has been only one player who played for his country at the world juniors, who said that he was going to get his agent to put in his contract with whatever team that drafted him-- that he be able to play for his country at the next tournament. His agent told him that it was not a good idea.
It would never happen because Bettman would never let the golden child who saved hockey in Pittsburgh ever leave Pittsburgh.. If Crosby did leave the Pens in 2013 though hockey in Pittsburgh would cease to exist there because everyone would fall off the Pens bandwagon again and Bettman is not gonna let that happen..
Sidney Crosby has often stated that his favorite team growing up was the Montreal Canadiens. By 2013, the salary cap will approx. be $65 million (with the maximum allowable amount for one player at 20%) if revenues grow at the same pace as the last couple years and assuming the next collective bargaining agreement gives players the same percentage of total revenue. Given this, Crosby will be able to obtain a contract that will pay him $12+ million per season.
Since Crosby has achieved the goal of bringing the Stanley Cup to Pittsburgh, will he set his sights on a new destination like Montreal when he becomes a free agent in 2013. He would play for his favorite childhood team and be in a larger market which would allow him to make more money.
Yes, Taylor Hall will also sign with Calgary and everyone will be happy.
