OmniSen... why would he leave money on the table? Makes no sense at all. He's coaching because he wants to coach and he makes money by coaching. No man alive would walk away from the profession they love while they surrender a couple thousand dollars.

You have to figure the guy has too much pride to just straight up quit on the team. I feel awful for him. I realize he's made mistakes that have cost the team but at this point the players aren't playing for him.

Dumb move if he is canned...
I have heard this refrain from so many of you people, and until now I have just held my tongue and chalked it up as just a few kids saying nonsense. But I have seen too many people parrot this same thought and I just cannot understand how so many people can subscribe to this thinking?

What do you not understand about this team being a business? What do you not understand about this team having given up on their coach and getting BLOWN OUT game after game?

What do you think that does to people who want to spend some money on entertainment? Are they gonna dish out money to go to a Sens game? Are they going to buy a jersey? Absolutely not.

Making a move like firing a coach tells fans and perspective consumers that the ownership is doing something to change the atmosphere of being chumps. This organization has had a culture of winning for a decade, and people demand that the team at least competes. No one is going to dish out NHL ticket money to watch their team get blown out.

How do you think this effects season ticket holders? The campaign to get season ticket holders to re up does not start in the offseason. It starts now. People who plopped down a small fortune for season tickets are certainly fed up by now, watching their team get pummeled in every game. There is no way they are going to pony up more money for next year unless their is some sign that changes are in the works.

Canning Clouston is not a move to salvage the season you MORONS! The season is done and over with. Canning Clouston is a symbolic move for the fans, as well as a way to get this team to at least be competitive in their losing. This team isnt good enough for a playoff run or even a Leafs playoff run. Especially after the deadline when this team become sellers. We will finish the league in the bottom 5 regardless if Clouston is here or not. But making some changes at this point is absolutely necessary from a business perspective.

Do you understand now?

I agree..

Part I don't agree is you calling fans "MORONS"..they've suffered enough, no need to bury them..

Do you understand how the Sens became a powerhouse, by continuously having a top 3 pick. Most serious Sens fans know that it is better to tank this year, than to go on a mini-winnning streak that gets you out of a lottery position.

You are very short-sighted, Ottawa does not attract superstars, they draft them, but it's hard to draft superstars if you don't have a top 3 pick.

While you wipe the froth from your face I'll inform you that fans aren't going to pay to see a mediocre hockey team with little hope of improving, which is what they'll get if the team continues to finish 17th-20th in the league over the next several seasons.

In fact the team will probably get more interest if they're bottom feeders with exciting young prospects than if they're a bit better and just outside the playoffs with little chance of improving.

I wonder for a team like Ottawa, and other teams who consistently win (I know we have no cups, but the playoff streak, high rankings, etc) if the fans get complacent. Maybe our losing can be a kick in the fans pants to get them excited when we become good again, like how it was when we made the playoffs for the first time, or upset NJ.

I know for a team like the Red Wings, its just so ho hum with them, that no one really gets THAT into it until at least the second round, because their fans are so used to winning, they're complacent fans who are spoiled as well.

This is exactly what happened in Mtl. They were spoiled with cups for decades and when the team missed the playoffs 5 times in a 8 years span, the Bell/Molson centre was half empty. The crazy mad habs fans that we see today are the result of two things. RDS becoming their official channel forcefeeding the population with habs news 24/7 and the fact that they had a few hard years making this mediocre team look like they're the best thing since sliced bread.

i'm saying money isn't the only reason he's coaching. He's a terrible coach and he knows it.

Well, for one it wouldn't look very good if he stepped down now would it? I'm sure that would all but guarantee him never getting another NHL coaching job. At least, not for a very long time. Nobody likes a quitter.

And secondly, the players on the team just flat out aren't good enough. It wouldn't matter who was coaching this team. They would still miss the playoffs no matter what.

Lastly, just 8 months ago we were saying that Clouston was the saviour and that he got a lot out of a mediocre team. We felt he was ripped off when he wasn't even nominated for the Jack Adams last year. Now he's a ****** coach? The players are the problem, not Cory Clouston but unfortunately it looks like he's going to take the blame for it.

Sorry, I didnt mean to upset the Canadian Vice and Virtue Police. Perhaps I should be dragged in front of your Political Correctness Court Human Rights Commission.

However, I do apologize for the crude remark. It just frustrates me to no end that so many people fail to grasp the reason why a move would be made, and can only believe it is because management wants to salvage the season.

The people in charge may not be the best in the world, as evident by our team this year, but they are hockey professionals and clearly they know the season is over, they arent trying to save it. This should have been clear to anyone after Melnyk told Murray to clear salary. All moves at this point are strictly business related and for next season.

I am not the first one to point out hockey is a business, but sometimes people around here need to be reminded. Sure its nice to get the first overall pick in the draft, but when the teams salary is near max and they are losing as badly as this team is, financial decisions also have to be considered for the overall health of the franchise.

Clousten has clearly lost the room, the team has no heart left is seems. Put Murray behind the bench, it won't salvage this season but at least it may send a message to some players

Ottawa is in good shape going into next year they have around $14 million in cap space as it is now.

Im still not sure I agree with that. You can see the effort is still there and guys are still trying. If he had lost the room I don't think you see the fights that happened in Philly. I just think its a combination of low confidence and low talent. Fragile group.

Based on their effort in the last few games (yesterday's game excluded), it tells me that this group this cares, especially the young ones. Guys like Butler, Winchester (he's really stepped it uo), Smith, Foligno and Regin have been really impressive. They work hard and play for the team, not themselves.

Ironic how is it that our worse game is the one where Kovy came back? I knew this would happen. His lack of effort and emotion seems to rub off on people he plays with cause they can't depend on him. We may not have won but we played better without him.

Keep Clouston. Let Murray walk. I get the feeling that the young players like Clouston and don't want him fired and this is why the effort is there.

Don't be foolish, if Clouston stepped down he would forfeit the rest of this year's salary.

I would argue that I would rather have a man that is committed to the team then someone who would quit and "step down"
