No, can't trade someone you just picked off of waivers. But if Detroit is desperate for a goalie, and Nabby doesn't make it through waivers, maybe we can unload Khabi for Brad Stuart. Both cap hits are the same (3.75m), and the Wings get a goalie who would likely be much better behind their defense than the one that's currently in front of him; we get a good vet on the backend who can take Larsson under his wing next season.

Just a thought/pipedream.

Speculation from CBC is that NJ picks him off waivers and Nabokov does not report. Then Detroit gets 1st priority on waivers (if only 1 team sent in a claim) and claims him. Detroit then sends NJ a late round pick for their trouble. If more then one team claims him though, Detroit could not have priority status (as per Bob McKenzie).

Although the Isles lack a #1 goalie, they have nothing to gain by getting Nabokov on a one year deal (unless they do what was posted above)

Amazed how so many of you don't realize that nabokov cannot be traded after being claimed off waivers. He would just get sent back to waivers for any other team to claim him.

Here's what I think:

Detroit needs a goalie.
Detroit saw St. Louis get pwned on the waiver claims twice in a row now.
So there's a good chance St. Louis would try to return the favour - especially to a rival.
If St Louis does so, they probably put Conklin on waivers - who Detroit is familiar and probably comfortable with.

That might be reading into it too much, but I honestly think this would be a scenario that Detroit would have no problem with.

I'm sure there will be a team that puts in a claim on him, but I'm also sure it won't be the Oilers.

I would say that Ken Holland has already placed a call to Tambellini.....
The Oilers could be asked to pick him up, to protect Nabi from getting snagged and the Oil then trade him for a 4th round pick.

Nevermind this is against the rules, they have to play him or replace him back on waivers.

Isn't there some rule in the CBA that states a player claimed off of waivers cannot be traded, and must be exposed to waivers again before being traded?

Yes, I just edited my post. I am wrong on my idea.

if someone grabs him off waivers they can't trade him this season without putting him through waivers again. (Mackenzie put it on twitter yesterday)

Why would the Islanders snag Nabokov, to screw over the Wings? Like it was mentioned, they can't trade him at the deadline without making him go through waivers again.

The loophole becomes his NMC and it's effect on this. TSN says he can't go on waivers after 10am today without his permission, so I'm assuming that's what DET is trying to use to their advantage.

Islanders wouldnt but I can think of a good 6 teams in the west who would surely consider picking him up rather than face Detroit in the playoffs with a decent goalie. And that cap hit is going to be minimal.

Nabokov would be excellent on pretty much every team in playoff contention because he could also serve as a backup. But if you're talking starters I'm sure Chicago and Washington would have the most interest.

Nobody including Nabokov should be surprised by this whatsoever. NYI have a huge void in their goaltending right now.

but i wonder if this move by the Isles was just to see if there is a deal to be made for Nabokov if he still wants to play for a contender? Philly, Wings, Caps, T-Bay maybe?

According to the rules, Nabby is not able to be moved in a trade, it's waivers again or nothing.

Nice move...

If any other "fans" on these boards compare the Oiler rebuild to the Islanders, they should be banned from posting...

"No guarantees when you rebuild...Look at the Thrashers or the Islanders...." Geez...

Ahahaha! Nabby is going to refuse to report, as per Bobby Mac.

Seen that coming. Frickin' Islanders are probably the biggest ? mark in the league when it comes to smarts.

Good luck with them making any deals with Detroit now.
