What was the last team to have back to back 30th place finishes?

The expansion Atlanta Thrashers.

2000-2001 and 2001-2002.

Hasn't happened since. That's pathetic.

Pittsburgh came close, finished with the worst record before the lock-out and the second worst the year after the lock-out. (Malkin, Crosby, Staal).

Tampa also had a 30th, 29th back to back not long ago (Stamkos and Hedman).

Here's hoping for a Pittsburgh or Tampa style turn-around.

Its equal right now. But we have a higher potential. Let's say Tavares and Hall are equal. They don't have a Petry, Paajarvi, or an Eberle.

Then for the up and coming the Oilers are 3rd in organizational ranking according to hockeys future. And they think Dubnyk is a border line bust and aren't as high on Petry. Islanders on the other hand are 17th.

I would argue Niederreider and Paajarvi are comparable.

I agree with the Petry and Eberle statements though. We have more potential, a product of better drafting.

We should take bets on whether he reports to Long Island.

I'll put all my chips on "no".

It's already reported he won't. It's pretty clear he only wants to go to a contending team and not just any team. He could have done that if he weren't looking for a huge contract during the off-season. Now he is willing to join a contender for peanuts but nobody else.

Yeah those are nice players but that's all they are.

I feel way more comfortable with our future.

The 2010 draft alone can be the draft that everyone talks about in the 3 years as the draft that turned the Oilers around. Martindale, Hamilton, Pitlick, Marincin and obviously Hall. Those 5 players have very high ceilings. It says a lot when out of all 5 Hamilton probably has the lowest ceiling and he just helped his country to a Silver in the juniors.

Then you got Lander, Hartikainen, VandeVelde who also have a chance to make an impact especially Lander. Guys like Lander are the heart of championship teams and I don't believe the Islanders have a guy like that.

Then we have 1 more really high pick to look forward to this year.
If we get Larsson we won't have to worry about D for a while. I would love to have:

Whitney-Larsson
Gibby-Petry
Smid-Pekham
Marincin

In 3 years that would be a great D core.

Pittsburgh also had Fleury first overall in '03. I hope we don't have to suck that much to get better.

To be fair the NHL is a lot stronger then it was back when Atlanta or Pittsburgh finished last. I mean the Oilers are the only team in the west under .500. That means that on a nightly basis the Oilers are facing above average NHL teams. There is rarely a game where the Oilers well have an easy time. Last time that happened was against the islanders and they managed to win that one.

I think the Oilers today are better teams then those Atlanta teams or Pittsburgh teams.

The Islanders have Oksposo, Bailey, De Haan, Hominick to go with Tavares and Nino. Plus you can add one of Larson, RNH, Couturier or Landescog. As well as question marks such as Schremp, Grabner, Grachev and that whiny russian kid (forgot his name).

They got a pretty good foundation to build on, it's just to bad they are probably the poorest run team in the league.

The biggest differences between the Oilers and Islanders rebuild:

1. The Islanders rebuild has been going on perpetually for how many years? As much as some like to downplay any success the Oilers have, the team did have at least one successful season in recent memory, and a few other playoff series wins. The Islanders haven't won a playoff series since Al Arbour was coaching.

2. The Oilers don't have Wang. It's not entirely clear that the Islanders ownership will shell out the dough necessary to sustain any level of success, should their prospect pool turn out well. Katz has demonstrated a willingness to spend to the cap for ****, so surely he'll spend as needed to maintain an actually competitive squad.

Soooo, the Islanders trade their best goaltender in Roloson for peanuts and then they make a waiver claim on Nabokov? That makes absolutely no sense.

Hope he gets suspended and has to sit out if he does not report. He knew the chances and the rules when he wanted to come back to the NHL.
