Nabokov claimed by Islanders. Will not report & Can't be traded
I'm pretty sure there's a conspiracy theory around this whole thing.
Anyone wanna take a stab at it?
You see, some punk kids were setting off fireworks which killed a bunch of birds, and fish across the U.S. They wanted to pin it on Nabokov because he's a communist and the easiest way to get him here was to have a contender offer him a contract. However since Wang is a communist he made Snow claim Nabby off waivers so he would have an excuse not to report and avoid being tried in U.S. courts.

If he doesn't show up, Nabby owes a HALF season to the Isles. How could that be managed?!?!?!
He doesn't owe anything to the Isles after this year. His contract will be up. It will just mean he spent the term of his contract on suspension so he was not compensated. This has no impact on next year.
Thanks for finding it again. Jesus I typed all the stuff " Nabakov going to a contender only, not reporting" and what not just found damn twitter news a tool I couldn't care less about. so thanks again
So did you find a link that says before Nabokov got claimed that he would only go to a contender?
The major fact we've learned here is that the waiver rules applying to Euro player are ridiculous unfair and illogical.
The second, minor fact we've learned is that the Isles were dicks to steal a player who they have no connection to, have not negotiated with, and who clearly intended (whether stated or not) to go to a contender. The super-dick move was to not waive him when he said he would not report.
EDIT: I, too, feel bad for Nabby. To think he could be going to a Cup contender or at least a solid team. His plan was to resurrect his career with a strong showing this season to get a new contract next season. Now he's going to have to go to a team he has no connection with, to basically be sacrificed to the wolves every night. Thank to the Isles, when his stats inevitably suck, he'll have trouble finding work next year. That's who I feel bad for, and I totally understand Nabby not wanting to report to destroy his career.
So every team that put in a claim were dicks to do so? Because the Isles weren't the only team to put in a claim and PLAY BY THE RULES.
Do you think Snow really wants a disgruntled goalie in the dressing room for the entire season with a bunch of kids?
That's only if he reports. I'm sure if he got a little more time to think about it, he would suck it up, make the best of it, and then use this opportunity to get another (and potentially better) contract.
Suspended players don't dress. They sit at home making no money.
Which makes it pointless. If you force him to play he won't be happy if you don't he won't improve the team so why bother forcing him to honor his contract.
Another point as I understand it, is that he doesn't have to honor the contract. If he refuses to report and the NYI don't waive him, he just sits until the summer. He was not previously owned by the Islanders and thus doesn't "owe" them anything. It's not like arbitration where a panel rules a player can go overseas but owes the team the rest of his signed contract (i.e. the Hudler situation with the Wings) when he returns.
That's only if he reports. I'm sure if he got a little more time to think about it, he would suck it up, make the best of it, and then use this opportunity to get another (and potentially better) contract.
Again you don't want a player in the dressing room that doesn't want to be there especially with a young team.
Which makes it pointless. If you force him to play he won't be happy if you don't he won't improve the team so why bother forcing him to honor his contract.
to show that you won't be pushed around.
They have no obligation to Nabokov to catering to his wants.
Why should the Isles do any favors for Nabby if he's going to not report for them? He's giving them the finger, and they should just be nice and let him go win a cup in Detroit?
Essentially, yes. They should have been smart enough to know that they would embarass themselves with this signing. If Snow had any brains he would be able to read between the lines and know Nabby did not want to go to a perennial bottom-feeder to have his stats destroyed and his chances of a career next season obliterated.
Also, you know Snow knew about Nabby not reporting before it was spread to the press, he could have averted the whole thing by letting him go. Like others have said, clinging to him just makes NYI look vindictive.
I dont think snow suspending him w/o pay is a good thing for the organization from the perspective of trying to attract players to play as a part of the NYI organization.. sure, claiming him off waivers is fine, but he if clearly does not want to play for you then do him a favour and let him do his thing.. im pretty sure that shows a sign of respect from the management to the players and there would really be no down side to this except that the NYI organization wasted 3.5k
Not interested in doing Nabokov any favors.
He and his rep want to showcase Nabokov, get him a contract offer from some team next summer.
If he doesn't show up, Nabby owes a HALF season to the Isles. How could that be managed?!?!?!
He can't owe just half a season. Players only become free agents on July 1. If he is suspended, and still under contract for the Islanders at all next season, it's for the whole season.
He signed intending to play for Detroit...you know...a team that isn't a complete embarrassment.
At least with Svatos and Wellwood, they went to competitive, respectable organizations.
Lets just put it this way:
Id rather get paid and play in the NHL then sit on my butt at home. It would suck having to play for a bottom feeder but thats the gamble you take when you sign in the KHL instead of the NHL.
How is it different? Radulov was in a middle of a 3 year deal. Nabokov is in the middle of a 1 year deal. The length of deals makes no difference.
The thing is...
The deal was signed in January 2011, and ends in June 2011.
Unless the CBA provides that all deal are deemed to be signed in July, Nabby ends up owing 6 months (or +- 40 games) to the Isles if he doesn't report.
First : How do they manage a "owing" period of 6 months? They allow Nabby to walk in December?
Second : If Nabby is suspended, doesn't play a game, and ends up owing a WHOLE YEAR to the Isles at 550K....
Expect a lawsuit, because it doesn't make any sense whatsoever.
