Senators decide to rebuild

http://www.theglobeandmail.com/sport...rticle1880105/

Quote:
It’s over.

The Ottawa Senators have taken a corporate decision to pull the plug on the 2010-2011 NHL season and move full force into a rebuilding program the likes of which the Edmonton Oilers are currently undertaking.

The decision was taken by senior executives in the days before the team’s latest embarrassments on the ice: a 7-1 loss to the Montreal Canadiens Friday night and a 6-2 defeat by the Philadelphia Flyers the previous night.

...

The Globe and Mail, however, has learned certain aspects of the plan.

- General manager Bryan Murray will finish out the year in his position but will move on to a senior advisory role similar to that held by coaching legend Scotty Bowman with the Chicago Blackhawks. Murray, who stayed on this season at Melnyk’s request, is open to this change as friends say the results of this season have left him “sickened.”

- coach Cory Clouston will also play out the year, but is highly unlikely to stay on as head coach. The new GM will have full responsibility for naming the coach of his choice.

Murray’s immediate task will be the “selling off” of player assets heading into the Feb. 28 NHL trading deadline. If playoff-bound teams are interested in the likes of forward Alexei Kovalev or defenceman Sergei Gonchar, two unhappy and underperforming expensive veterans, deals could be forthcoming. It is even possible that longtime stalwarts such as captain Daniel Alfredsson and defenceman Chris Phillips could be moved it they agree to the deals.

about time. gotta think calgary is next. hopefully murray can get some picks or young talent before the draft to make the process quicker.

his top 5 pick will be huge in the process

It's the right move.

I can't imagine any team taking on Kovalev, but if they did the return would be next to nothing.

Same goes for Gonchar, but i would have to assume that the Sens would have to take an undesirable contract in return (although one that's not as hard to swallow as Gonchar's)

I could see Phillips going for a 2nd and change.

Glad to see management is following the players' lead and decided to tank the rest of the year. Players seem to have made that decision back in October.

Should be good news for Sens fans, the worst thing the franchise could do is attempt to slap together a contender with some quick trades. I think Toronto fans can vouch for how frustrating "retools" can be.

Gonchar to- Caps or Boston For Boston 1st and 3rd

Alfredsson to LA For 1st+

Phillips to San Jose for 2nd+ Prospect

Spezza to Atlanta for Burmistrov+ 1st+ 3rd

Build around Fisher (basically interim captain)
Karlsson
Cowen
Burmistrov
Top 5 pick

10 bucks says they win the cup before the leafs do.

I think they will still hold onto Spezza they will never get his worth in a trade and he is still fairly young and will be quite capable for the next five years.

meh i think an Top prospect and a first is doable as he is a 1st line center.....

And

he wont win a game for you next year when the plan would be essentially to tank. So basically you win by loosing lol.

Also...i know its kinda outrageous....but what about this idea...

To LA:
Alfredsson
Spezza

To Ott:
Brayden Schenn
Jonathan Bernier
1st

Only your Phillips trade seems likely, I don't see any of those other ones going through because the other teams are definitely not parting with 1st round picks + for massive cap hits of underperformers

I can't imagine Gonchar having that kind of value.

I also don't see Spezza getting moved.

Another Leafs fan who doesn't understand the Sens needs. Fisher will be dealt if we can deal him, Spezza is the guy we build around.

Additionally, even if the Globe is right, we have assets Edmonton didn't have when rebuilding (namely: a #1C in his prime and a #1D in Karlsson who's 20.) We also have a depth of prospects on the blueline. While I do think it'll be good to re-stock the cupboard, I don't think it'll be a 5 year rebuild like the Leafs are going through.

I seen this comming Ottawa has one of the weakest lineups in the League but those thinking Spezza is traded off I doubt it unless a Overpayment they wont be selling him low and they do not need to tank they have been doing this for the last 2 months. But they also have a good start for a rebuild with Karlsson Runblad Cowen on the d look for them to draft forwards

Gonchar and Kovalev are pretty much salary dumps. The Sens will not get much value in return and probably will have to take back a contract.

Alfredsson's value is probably not what Ottawa fans will be happy with. IMHO, mid 1st + is a pipe dream. Teubert+2nd is the most they will get from LA.

Phillips probably nets something like a 2nd rounder+a later round pick.

I would think Burmistrov is a non-starter in negotiations with Atlanta.
Perhaps, something like Bergfors+1st+a contract.

?

They have bad goaltending, and bad coaching.

Ottawa may not be in the realm of the elite teams, but they aren't a 27th place team on paper. As they said in the 24/7 series, "You're never as good as your best streaks and never as bad as your worst ones."

Ottawa is having an off year. There's a couple reasons for that. On paper though, I'd much rather have the assets the Senators have then many franchises in the league. It's not like it's a mystery what we're missing.

You shut your ***** mouth. (to the bold)
Gonchar won't fetch that much, something like Ryder+Min 2nd(2011)+4th(2012) maybe.
Besides that I think you did a good job I really doubt Atlanta does that but its what the Sens would need back. Maybe add Peverley and take out the 3rd.

Kovy should be able to get a 3rd easily but likely a 2nd to a playoff team with the weak free agent market

Phillips i would only trade for 2nd + prospect

Fisher is up for grabs

Alfie and Gonchar will probably be here next year but if anyone wants Gonchar we probably have to take a salary dump like Boyes.

Spezza will stay here long term

You dont need to be so harsh lol. Its his perspective of what is best. He gave a very valuable deal for Spezza, and I promise if Murray was offered that he'd consider it. Spezza aint untouchable, as much as I agree that we should build around him.
