Smid and Brule

What kind of return could Edmonton get for this package?

Smid and Brule are both top 10 picks who have not lived up to their draft hype but are still very capable NHL regulars.

Smid looked to take a huge step forward last year, but not having Lubomir Visnovsky as a partner has definitely set him back. He's been pushed down the depth chart by Theo Peckam, but IMO is still a very good old school 4-5 defenseman who hasn't reached his peak yet.

Brule I think got lost in the shuffle in Edmonton. Most fans seemed to think it was either him or Cogliano, and management and coaches have shown time and time again that they will give Cogliano the opportunities. With Omark and Reddox up, and Ryan Jones impressing, Brule will be in tough to find a role here.

Not looking to dump these guys by any means, just want to see what's out there.

I think Smid having neck pains is apart of the reason he isn't do as well this year. I don't suspect either guy gets us much and we might be better off keeping them.

You can say that about almost every player on the Oilers roster, but there comes a point where we will need to be trading packages like this for one guy, even if that one guy isn't as good as you would expect, as long as it brings us an upgrade. That said, I would hold Smid and focus on moving our more useless d-men like Vandermeer (won't bring us much), Foster (might get us something) and Strudwick (probably untradeable).

Well that's the problem. We are offering guys that are having a bad year with a history of injuries. You really think we get an upgrade for any of the guys that Oiler fans want to trade?

Not a huge upgrade, no. But expecting to fill a need with a 3rd line faceoff specialist for Brule and Foster, or a third/fourth line crasher who isn't totally useless on the puck to replace our 4th line plugs should be reasonable. Foster and Brule for Reasoner and a late pick (if Reasoner wasn't UFA this summer) or David Clarkson and a late pick are decent deals for Edmonton in that it fills a need, but we are giving up more in "value" than Reasoner would be worth.

I'm not proposing those deals per se, just examples.

I have a hard time believing that Chicago accepts this deal. The Oilers might not either, foolishly.

Neither of these guys will bring back anything worthwhile individually. They'll both be part of packages if they're moved.

It took all of 1 post to deviate from the original topic. Stay golden, dnicks17.

I'd like Brule on the Sabres - but don't think they make good trading partners.

Maybe a 2nd/3rd rounder that we could get for Connolly/Montador somewhere else?

He can score...it's just in spurts. He's wildly inconsistent but I expect him to be in the 20 goal range by the end of the year.

Brule would be a mid to late 2nd, Smid late first to early second and a 3rd

Meaning they're worth more in a package.
