Should the Red Wings now target Ray Emery?

Just a thought. Now that the whole Nabokov idea has become unrealistic in Detroit, how about Emery? If Detroit still needs goaltending help, is Emery an option?

Maybe offer him a PTO and send him to Grand Rapids for a few games. If he seems to be healthy and in playing shape, sign him to a 1-year contract for minimum. I think Emery, if completely healthy, can be a very good backup in this league and get quite a few starts if needed. He's got playoff experience and when he's on his game, he's solid. What could Detroit have to lose? If he doesn't work out, waive him and send him down for the rest of the year.

I don't think they are seriously looking for help in net. They took a shot at getting a great goalie at a cheap price, and if it failed, then just stick with what they have. It's ridiculous how many proposals have been formed just because of the Nabby News.

The "if he's healthy" part is a huge obstacle.

Emery cant play in grand rapids or anywhere in the AHL for that matter. In order to play in the AHL you have to be signed by December 15.

I cant see any teams taking a chance on Emery at this point. Maybe a try out when next season comes around. But i dont think any team is going to use a contract and a roster spot for a player that has to prove he is able to play

Well considering they just need a back up for Howard, I doubt they go after a goalie that just went through a very serious operation and that has been inactive all year.

There is a bunch of cheap deadline options for back ups: Giggy, Mike Smith, Leclaire, Hedberg, Theo just to name a few.

This ^

Especially Detroit who try to avoid any players with a rap sheet (the exception being Bert....)

Its unlikely that Emery will ever be able to play hockey again.

I think Philadelphia is pretty much willing pretty much give away Michael Leighton. He could play in net for decent stretches at a low cap cost.

would leighton have to go through re-entry waivers in order to be traded? he could probably be had for a 5th rounder or maybe later if not.

Garth snow will foil that plan too, either way wasn't detroit looking for playoff experience rather than a legit backup, nanny has experience and for that price was a steal if he could get going, but that didn't work and Detroit will likely just move on.

Yeah, I think Detroit will stick with Howard and Osgood as their 2 goalies.

This. They had a chance to upgrade with Nabokov perhaps. Emery doesn't offer that upgrade really...

In case of an injury I could see Philly signing him dirt cheap. Flyers won't risk losing Leighton on re-entry so i would think he's fourth on our depth chart behind Backlund. Signing him is still a huge risk which is why i doubt this would happen. He will most likely get a couple looks in the offseason but that's it.

The problem with Leighton for some teams like Detroit is that Leighton is signed through next season. And the Flyers aren't willing to risk him on re-entry waivers right now, they still expect to have him for themselves.
