Minnesota Twins 2010-2011 Off-Season & Spring Training Thread

It didn't feel right to bump last season's thread to post this, so I figured we could use a place to talk Twins until those few magical weeks when Hockey and Baseball intersect.

20 Year Anniversary of "the greatest World Series ever played" - Fay Vincent

Here's some news:

The Globe and Mail is reporting Jon Rauch has signed with the Blue Jays. Just watch the bullpen erode away...

Jim Thome is BACK to chase number 600 in a Twins uniform, at a cost of $3M + Bonuses for one year.

Alexi Casilla signed a deal for $865,000 for one year to avoid arbitration.

Matt Capps, Francisco Liriano, Glen Perkins, Kevin Slowey and Delmon Young have all been extended arbitration but remain unsigned.

Any news on Pavano?

All I've heard is that apparently the Twins are having Thome put pressure on CP to re-sign.

I love how Capps pitches one inning per game, if that, and makes 10x as much as Perkins, a starting pitcher who should be pitching at least 7 innings per game, every 5th game or so. Yeah yeah, I know the closers deal with pressure, can blow a game, etc.

And there's the whole bit about how Perkins is terrible, and Capps is a proven MLB closer.

But that couldn't have anything to do with the disparity, could it?

If Perkins is starting for the Twins, something went wrong.

Great news...2 year $16.5 million deal. I thought it would be more than that.

Holy. Totally confused Perkins for Baker for the past day. Ha. Anyways, great to see Pavano coming back. Thought for sure it would be around $9.5-10/year.

Just glad we didn't have to give him 3 years at his age.

Nick Punto signs a 1 year deal with the Cardinals...

I would've preferred him as a backup instead of Tolbert or anyone else we have but I suppose we save some money by letting him go.

Glad to see they're getting the band back together for another first round sweep!

As much as I disliked punto, his defense was solid. He was overpayed and was terrible at the plate, but he was a pretty good bench player. If casilla or whatshisface goes down I would've liked punto out there instead of Tolbert.

But all of that logic goes right out the window when he pops-out 3 times in a row with a man on 3rd.

At this point, I'd say they'd be lucky to get swept in the first round.

That's just plain good news. So who's the new whipping boy? Delmon if he doesn't start at a blistering pace? Cuddy? Kubel?

My gut says Kubel, he was so solid two years ago, and regressed so hard last year...

Kubel or Span are my guesses.

Kubel will always be my Twins whipping boy. He comes up big when it doesn't matter and strikes out in every other situation. If Kubel gets the ball past the catcher's mitt I am in shock every time.

Well this will answer some of the bullpen questions... Twins claim Dusty Hughes off waivers.

Our bullpen looks horrendous. I'm peeved that we didn't even try to bring back Fuentes. What I saw last year was a guy that had the mental fortitude to perform in the big games. I'd feel a lot better about 2011 if we had a proven closer/setup duo to throw out there. The darn combination of tight owners and Mauer's deal is killing us.

I don't think the current owners qualify as tight. 100+million isn't small ball anymore.

Agree on Fuentes though.
