O Brownie, Brownie, Wherefore Art Thou Brownie?

Deny thy Kings and refuse thy C
Or if thou wilt not, then be with me
A Captain thou art and a Captain thou be
We need our Dustin immediately

Dustin: Shall I do more and what shall that be? To score more goals or hit the enemy?

Score more goals, we need from thee
Hit all that moves who is the enemy
Thou art thyself, though not this game
Not this, not last, nor recently

Dustin: No skate, no stride, no powerful means. Lost I look in the offensive scheme?

Lost thou looks on offense and D
Thou must remedy this most urgently

Does this anti-Brown stuff literally pop up every hour on the hour? I don't see how the general population around here can take it.

Yeah, lately it looks like he has a hand grenade on the end of his stick whenever he touches the puck.

Yeah that and plays last night where he gets knocked down on the powerplay, expects a call and doesn't bother chasing a loose puck into the corner. It is one thing to not be scoring but he was down right useless last night and actually a detriment to the team. Both him and Kopitar looked like they'd rather be at a gay bar last night. And I'm not saying that as a pejorative but an analogy of how disinterested they are. The Sharks all but gave that game away last night and the Kings appeared to have a hard time accepting the gift. It was the top line that lead that charge. I know it is only one game but it (along with every other game from here on out) was crucial the Kings get a win and not trying your hardest is unacceptable. The effort by two of the leaders of this team is a bit disconcerting to say the least.

... Pretty much. Usually it's after losses, though; not after a third straight win. Not even wins will stand in the way anymore, apparently. Talk about dedication to the task!

Come on JT, you have to agree that Dustin has been mostly invisible lately.

Hell, you're more likely to find his picture on a milk carton than his name show up on the score sheet.

Glad you said that. It always bugs me when people use it wrong. However; the comment still works even when using the correct meaning.

Dustin's slide started when he was no longer paired with Kopi. Hmmmm

I'm curious, what grade would you give on his effort AND performance last night? I'd give it a D- for both.

The one thing I don't get about this board is that Kings fans are very divisive like in American politics. You are either this or that. Republican or democrat. You are pro-Lombardi or anti-Lombardi. You are pro-<insert players name> or anti <insert same players name>. Why can't we just formulate opinions based on what we are observing? I have no axe to grind with any of these guys.

I like Brown as a player but I'm increasingly believing he was a poor choice for a captain but beyond that, his play lately and especially last night, has been downright lousy. I'm not talking about flubbing the puck. I'm talking about effort and heart. Where is it?

... I just know who it is we're talking about here. Dustin Brown. He's not a point per game player, he's not a defensive specialist, he doesn't have a devastating shot, he's not a terrific passer, etc. He does a lot of things adequately or well, but aside from hitting and drawing penalties, he doesn't stand out in any one skill area.

Just like 99.9% of the players in the NHL, he's capable of falling into slumps. If you expected 45-50 points at this stage of the season for Brown, you simply set your expectations too high. San Jose did a great job defensively on all the Kings last night. We'll see what happens on the road trip. Brown will be alright.

Not sure how point production qualifies or disqualifies him from his leadership position though....He seems to have the trust of his teammates and management. We as fans have little or no insight into the room itself.

good point, but there are two things he can control every game. two things the team and fans want every game. effort and physical play. he can control this every shift and when he plays with zero passion and sense of urgency. when he does this management, teammates and fans should be criticizing his game.

im not a hater or lover of DB, i just want effort every shift. his game is physical with some good scoring ability. to often when he slumps i think he gets away from the basics of what makes DB effective. play the body, cause TO's and havoc in the offensive zone. he does this then he will get his scoring chances.

if gets out there playing physically, causing havoc then LA will gain momentum and scoring chances. he does this he is leading by example, what a C should be doing every shift, every night.

That is the funny part I suppose. I have no illusions of who and what Brown is and I think he 90% of the time, plays his role well. Lately though, he has been brutal on both ends of the ice. His decision making with and without the puck is hurting the team. Far worse than typical for him. Hence, the poetic interlude.

Brown is streaky.

There is no question that he disapears for stretches at time.

Shanahan used to go throough stretches like Brown is going through and his teammates would string together video collages or his goals to get his confidence back

Maybe an idea the Kings should try?

Ultimately Brown should be on the 3rd line on this team though. The Kings just need the talent to push him down the depth chart.
