Matt Walker Clears Waivers

RT @TSNBobMcKenzie: Matt Walker (PHI) and Ales Kotalik (CGY) on waivers.

Quote:
No team is expected to make a move for Walker, as his $1.7 million contract with injury questions extends through 2013.

Walker has played just 4 games for the Flyers this season, since being acquired in a trade for Simon Gagne with Tampa Bay last July. He did not collect any points from the blue line but seemed to be rounding into form just as Pronger became available.

If Walker’s salary clears waivers, it could pave the way for the Flyers to either make a move at the Feb. 28 trade deadline and acquire a little extra salary on a rental player for the player, or to sign Ville Leino to a well-deserved contract extension.

Leino has been unable to sign an extension with the Flyers this season as they have been hamstrung by the tagging rule, which prevents them from committing more to next year’s salary cap than this year’s upper limit of $59.4 million.

Stay tuned.

Cap space!! I like how the offseason is slowly undoing itself.

Would have been nice to have him around in the playoffs (if he gets claimed that is), but it certainly free's up some cap space for an acquisition.

The question is then, is this move a sign that we should expect to see something soon, or just because they didnt feel like having him sit in the pressbox?

This is so crazy I'm actually going to type out, Oh My God!

So hopefully someone picks him up, because then Homer has 2 people he can **** us over with re-entry waivers.

Does this mean trade coming in?

Is a trade coming? Please don't be a trade for Giguere. Eklund has been talking about that for a few weeks.

Edit: They don't have to send him down to the minors. They just won't have to put him through wivers to send him down again, right?

There will be other viable replacements. There are other Matt Walker's in the league who aren't in the middle of a 4-year contract with a cap hit higher than your 6th defenseman. The waiver wire will only be more active.

There's the final sign.

Homer's not here to build anymore. We're in it to win it this year.

I doubt it means a trade is definitely coming, but it's at least a sign that Homer wants to have the room to make moves.

If we get JS I'm going to be pissed.

The guy can't play back to backs. Lavy loves going back to back with his goalie.

If he clears do you think he'll be in the AHL?

So the $3.25M we never should have spent will hopefully either all be gone or in the minors.

I dont know why this is cause for celebration. yet. Just because he is waived doesnt mean hes off our roster. .ie see Brian Rolston when he was waived by NJ.

They ran out of hips for him to have surgery on I guess.

trade's coming, homer's actually not awful on midseason trades when he's got cap space anyway.

It is cause for celebration because there is at least a possibility he is off our roster, and that the organization realizes he is the most expendable.

The Devils don't have a reason to keep him in the minors. Clearing Walker's money opens the team up for a minor trade deadline deal.

Clears cap space. How much does that make for us? Can we absorb some potential cap punishment for bonuses?

It would work, but barely.
