Laviolette being rewarded for winning ways-on, off the ice

http://www.philly.com/dailynews/spor...f_the_ice.html

Quote:
CHEWING GUM in hand, during a timeout in last year's Stanley Cup playoffs in Boston, Peter Laviolette stirred his team with an expletive-laden tirade that probably would have made the old women in the second row blush.

In his public persona, as the bench boss of the top team in the NHL, Laviolette is serious, intense and intimidating.

That's not the person former Flyer Rod Brind'Amour remembers, after serving as Laviolette's captain of the Stanley Cup-winning Carolina Hurricanes in 2006.

Laviolette returned to Raleigh, N.C., yesterday as one of the co-coaches for this weekend's All-Star Game.

"What stands out for me," Brind'Amour said in a phone interview this week, "is that he made everyone care for one another. When you get close to the end, close to winning the Cup, it's the little things that make the difference. It's about a whole team concept. You want to play hard for the people you care about. He made our team a tight-knit unit. It wasn't about one guy.

"He knows his stuff. But when you get to the NHL, every coach knows the X's and O's. His specialty is relating to players."

I love Lavi. Hell, he's one of the best coaches this team has had in quite a while.

Wow, that was some read. I like the "10-game outlooks"; break the season down into sections so you can strategize, but not so long that there isn't a point of crossing a finish line, albeit an intermediate one.

I think back to when Laviolette was between coaching jobs and sitting on TSN panels. It's neat to think of how quickly he has assumed such a pivotal role in this team's successes.

I wonder, though, why Richards or Pronger aren't quoted. Please don't misunderstand this as a knock against the team leaders. I have a journalism degree, so when I read stories, I wonder about the process of approaching sources and what the motivation is to say the things that they do. Why, for instance, would Shelley be the primary voice of the team in this article? Shelley obviously gave good quotes, and the story runs well with his POV, but I'm curious about what may not have been chosen or who wasn't approached.

I wanted Ted Nolan. Figured he'd be a good fit.

Glad we got Lavi instead. Still think Nolan would do well here, but not as well as Lavi has done.

Since when is saying "get me one." an expletive-laden tirade?

It was a 30 second timeout. The clip of him saying that lasts maybe 5 seconds. Don't be naive.

It also doesn't specify Game 7. Because during that timeout he sure didn't seem to be yelling. But he certainly could have been yelling during another timeout in that series.

That was the general message of the timeout though. I believe players since have said he wasn't chewing the guys out, he was calming them down. But whatever, thats Frank Seravalli for ya.

I'm not convinced we do, that's my point.

Because if it was THE timeout, from everything we've seen it was NOT an expletive ridden tirade.

So if they are insisting it WAS one, I'm concluding that it isn't THE timeout.

I have to ask, with a job like this, you have to wonder how Lavy didn't have a job starting the season with any other team.

I am so PISSED that the HBO Special was this year and not last. I would SO LOVE to see an inside look at the Flyers. Laviolette, Pronger in the dressing room, Richards quiet leadership, Bob no speaky da English. Man - how I would have loved to see that.

Oh well.

I agree. Lava was my first choice and Ted Nolan second. I am glad that the Flyers went with Lava.

Here's another article. Awesome quote:

http://www.courierpostonline.com/art...fire-brimstone

Quote:
"I'd say I'm in between," Laviolette said. "My mother is a driven person. There's not a lot of wiggle room with her. You can't B.S. my mom, nobody can. She sees through everything."

And his father?

"My dad's a nice man," Laviolette said. "Everybody likes my dad. So I'm probably more like my mother."

Laviolette will share his first All-Star experience with his wife, Kristen, their three children, Peter, Jack and Elisabeth, and both sets of their parents.

Just a general question was he given a principal contract extension. I cannot remember off the top of my head.

He was signed to a multi-year contract in Dec. 2009. To my knowledge, nothing has changed since then.

Much better than that me-and-my-press-clippings-first, tub of lard Hitchcock. None of this will go to Laviolette's head.

I'm confused.

Last year the team was in utter disarray, and Bob wasn't on the team.

Great articles - thanks Flyersfanatic and MSE!

I am SO glad Lavi is in Philadelphia, and we're seeing the results. I was iffy when he was brought in, but he's won me over many, many times over. Those articles speak to why.

I'd love to be a fly on the dressing room wall to hear some of his speeches and see the behind the scenes stuff. I think I'd probably come away more impressed with Lavi than I am already.

Shelley was available, while many of the Flyers are in Costa Rica, Canada, etc.
Seravalli's piece reads current, leaving available Flyers at a minimum. Note the time elements he employs. He goes back into the past then to the present. He identifies when he spoke to Brindy, and you know Shelley's quote have to be fairly recent, as this is his first season with the team.
Gormley's piece reads like he took a good story (coach and parents) and garnished it with leftovers. Read Richards' and Boucher's quotes by themselves, then read the nearest paragraphs and figure out when exactly they said them. You really can't. Who knows when he got those quotes.
Also, Gormley's "Stanley Cup parade" in Raleigh was more like a big party in the parking lot of the RBC Center. Technically, I guess the team paraded into the parking lot. But he uses the phrase like they rode through downtown, and it sits there like parsley on a plate.
