Yes, what a great site.

I just had surgery to remove a tumor from my skull (along with a chunk of the skull itself), and during a consultation the Neurosurgeon happened to check out the CT scans of my lower back, which show I have a couple of bulging discs. His opinion was that my trouble was not something that would require surgery ... mirroring the opinion of the back specialist I had seen over here in Victoria some years ago. The Surgeon who did the operation has a very good rating.... heh... nice to know after the fact!

As an aside, I suffer from chronic back pain, but am able to function at full capacity. Of course that full capacity doesn't include full contact ice hockey played at the highest level. I certainly hope that Edler won't have to put up with a situation like my own, now or in the future.

He's saying the scary things to scare the other GM's and keep them in check.

Every GM knows that we've got 6 defenders who are top 4 on just about every team in the league.

We've got a guy who's been playing like a solid #5 who'll be sitting in the press box and Rome who's still a very good #7 (borderline #6) who'll be joining him in the playoffs.

We've also got two seemingly solid (albeit mostly untested) guys who are on very low cap hit contracts that aren't required to pass through waivers.

Gillis says the scary things so other GM's can't say they know Edler is coming back soon and we need to drop salary and try and lowball him. This way we're on even playing grounds.

I still maintain Sami Salo is close to returning and all this talk of "it's not when but If" was pure BS. He'll be back in the lineup in less than 2 weeks IMO.

Well at least you've got your answer as to who we unload/trade when that happens eh? (eg., nobody). Which is why I said at the time, do nothing until that happens.

Obviously nobody should have been moved until Salo's return forced the team to be cap compliant but I just didn't buy into the notion Salo wouldn't play a regular season game in Vancouver this year - we'll see if that is in fact the case over the next few weeks.

The Canucks will be playing without their best defenseman but still have 4 bonafide top 4 dmen in the lineup and one waiting in the wings. There isn't another team in the league that could say that. Edler's absence will certainly be fealt but if any team can cover his loss it's the Canucks. I guess we'll find out if the coaching staff was right all along about Keith Ballard in that he needs to play extremely limited, sheltered minutes.

Even SOB didn't look out of place when forced into a top four role (at least for a time).

If true.. 8-10 weeks is far from a disaster. Even without Salo I'm confident in our defense and see no reason why Ballard can't handle more minutes than he has been. Considering that he has averaged somewhere in the 30 points range throughout his career he's got a lot more to give offensively at an absolute minimum. Right now he has 5 points, which 16 points less than his worst season offensively at the NHL level (when I'm guessing he played for an especially horrible Phoenix team).

There had been serious discussions as far as who the team might have to trade in order to bring Salo back, and it appears as though that conversation has come to an end. If we can bring Salo back and Edler is able to play at least a handful of regular season games in April this could end up working in the Canuck's favour. Gillis will be able to keep our group of forwards intact if he needs to and there's no reason to trade away any of our defensemen anymore.

Florida screwed themselves in this deal because they lost Grabner for nothing.
By my estimation Grabner's already making Florida pay. They could use him right about now.

Grabner's on pace for 26 goals and 10 Assists, so roughly a 0.500 PPG pace in his second season, with 65 games played at the NHL level. I always saw him as a player that would break out after 160 to 240 games at the NHL level.

I think the team will continue to truck along. The important thing at this stage is that Edler is healthy and ready to go by the playoffs. I agree that this is Ballard's time to shine; he has patiently waited for his opportunity and done and said all the right things. Now's the time to step up.

The curse of Salo lives! Anyone noticed our D has been chronically injured since Salo came to town? I think we need to have this man retire so he can stop cusing his fellow blueliners.

There's 11 weeks of the season left so Edler should be healthy right in time for the first round.

Last night on Sportsnet Connected they had an interview with Gillis taking about Salo's rehab. He stated that Salo was progressing well until about a week ago when he hit a plateau. Gillis says it is the the last bit for the player to get back to 100% that is the toughest and Salo will have to fight through this before he would be ready to return to the lineup.

Definitely something Gillis would know first hand from his playing career.

Also noted in the Vancouver Sun:
"When Sami is cleared medically to play we have a plan for him," Gillis said. "He has been inching along. He seemed to hit a plateau a week or so ago and now he is fighting through that. When you get to the last stages of this type of injury incremental gains are really difficult.

And we are clearly being as conservative as possible with Sami. He is an older guy, a veteran player, and he has to be mentally, emotionally and physically ready to play."

Yeah, I'm thinking positive right now as well. Good opportunity for our depth to step up.

I'm more concerned for my fellow Canuck fans. If we go through a bit of a losing streak because of this, there could be quite a few posters injured as a result of jumping off the ledge...

It seems like it. That's what it was like last game with Edler out. Samuelsson used to play the point for Detroit. It's definitely not the most ideal situation as Samuelsson on the point has failed to impress me yet whenever the Canucks have tried it. I'm not sure what our alternatives are? Samuelsson is a right hand shot which compliments that point so I guess it's our best match for now.

I'd think Salo would be heading that position when he's back though. So let's hope for a quick and successful return.

Much easier to predict when someone will be back from back surgery than a serious concussion.

I really hope that's not the case. In that situation both players are playing the points on their off wings, making it extra difficult when the PK'ers clear it out along the side boards.

I could just be nitpicking, though.

Man this sucks... something ALWAYS happens with our defense. And to think some people wanted Ballard waived? Seriously?

Even more wanted Bieksa waived. Even though I was in the group that wanted him dealt, I always felt Bieksa had some trade value.

I agree...as poorly as he played, he was still an asset and I'm positive that we could have gotten something half decent for him. Even if he only improved marginally he'd still be valuable to some team in need of a tough, scrappy defenseman who was good in the dressing room and could still put up points. Waiving him would have been incredibly dumb.

Obviously the only reason the waive/trade Ballard, trade Bieksa or any other option was considered was predicated on the defense being healthy and the team wanting to get Salo back in the lineup.

If you wanted Salo back in before the playoffs, then something would have had to be done.

Injury to Edler clearly changes that equation.
