Buffalo - Edmonton

To Buffalo:

Ales Hemsky
Sam Gagner
Ladislav Smid or Sheldon Souray
Teemu Hartikainen
2012 1st rounder

To Edmonton:

Thomas Vanek
Zach Kassian or Tyler Ennis
Mark Pysyk
Shaone Morrisonn (salary wise)

Let's hear the great mixed reviews hf has to offer.

Doesn't really help either team.

Terrible for Buffalo.

We want no part of Souray. We can't afford to pay him 4.5M next year to play in the minors. We had the opportunity to claim him on re-entry waivers months ago and passed and we're not interested in him now.

Ennis and Kassian are pretty much untouchable to us. Pysyk is our 2010 1st round pick and we won't trade him easily. I'd rather keep him; there's not enough coming back to entice us to include him.

I'd rather keep Vanek over Hemsky. Hemsky's good but he's been injured a few times within the past couple seasons and he's missed significant time.

The best two pieces coming back would be Gagner and the 2nd, which should be early so it's like a late 1st. Gagner and that pick aren't enough to pry away Ennis or Kassian alone from us.

Edited, plus Hemsky is cheaper than Vanek, both elite.

Forgive me if I'm wrong, but I don't believe Souray was ever on re-entry waivers. But I agree, no one in their right mind would ever trade for the right to pay Souray in the minors AND absorb his full cap-hit.

The edited trade doesn't make too much (or any) sense from a Buffalo viewpoint, although the 2012 pick could potentially be very high. It doesn't help Edmonton too much either.

Vanek only burdens the team with another heavy contract for a prolonged period of time, which Edmonton is already blessed with in Horcoff (making it a bit tenuous to resign RFAs in the future). Plus the Oilers have Hall anyway.

Of the two, Kassian would make more sense, Ennis is another small center. Skilled, high potential, but the Oilers are small and young as it is. Essentially, a Gagner-for-Ennis swap doesn't accomplish too much in filling needs. Gagner and a high first for Kassian feels like too much.

Pysyk is a good defensive prospect, yet giving up Smid sets the Oilers back. What was the point of enduring all the growing pains of a young d-man, only to trade him away once he's developed and repeat the cycle? Defensemen take time, and it will take a while for Pysyk to progress.

I don't really like the trade, because it sets Buffalo back with what they are seemingly trying to accomplish. They drafted Kassian to fill a need that at the time, Stafford wasn't filling. He's playing better, but is a FA at the end of the year. If they re-sign him, it would be great to have two wingers with a little size to go along with Ennis and Gerbe, etc. Additionally, Pysyk is a relatively highly rated defense prospect that no one knows how will play out. I'd rather keep him at this time. I like Gagner and Hemsky for what they are, but there are too many unknowns and quality prospects going back to Edmonton in this proposal for me.

It's just a huge reshuffle... and Buffalo is taking a few often off-injured players. Can't see em doing it.

Buffalo would say no.

Simplify it. How about something like Gagner and Paajarvi for Vanek and Pysyk? Add in the Souray for Morrisonn swap if the salary doesn't work for the Oilers.

I doubt the teams make good trading partners though, unless it is something more minor like Brule for Butler.

I keep seeing this one and don't mind it. Or perhaps Cogliano if a minor draft choice is included.

Souray was never on re entry waivers. I agree the deal is awful though.

God no from a Sabres POV. Make Gagner one of the big 3 or the 1st pick 2011 to even make it a consideration. But this is just a lateral move position wise that makes the Sabres worse long term

What would Edmonton want just for Gagner?

Buffalo needs a center and Gagner might be someone to take a chance on.

Yeah, it'd be a much simpler solution if Tambellini and Regier just switched jobs instead.

Edmonton is weak up the middle, unless its for an upgrade at center or defence it isn't happening.

Buffalo gets hosed. No thanks.
The only Buffalo player on that list that has a shot at getting traded is Morrisonn.
You offer nothing comparable to Vanek. Hemsky isn't even close.
Kassian is a cut above just about everyone you offer from Edmonton as well.

Like I said, no thanks, Buffalo gets hosed.

This deal is stupid for both teams. I think someone like Brule or Cogliano could realistically be traded to Buffalo, since the Sabres are in desperate need of scoring line centers, and those 2 guys still have some potential and might need a change of scenery.

Something like Sekera for Cogliano I think could work, but the OP's proposal is just a cluster-****.

Sekera's been on Sabres top pairing with Myers and is under Buffalo's control for a few more years. Butler is more likely the player they'd be looking to move.

Huh?

Vanek by far has the biggest cap hit. Remember, Sourays cap hit right now to the Oilers is exactly $0. Oilers aren't gaining any cap space in this deal.

I take Hemsky at 4M long before I take Vanek at 7M.
