Calgary and Montreal

Calgary:
Roman Hamrlik
Lars Eller
1st

Montreal:
Jay Bouwmeester

Clears some cap room for the off season, if the Flames fall out of the race and Monteal needs D-men.

This won't work because in trades the other team usually has to accept the offer.

Hamrlik is a UFA at the end of the year, I like J-Bow but not at 7 mill. and the Habs need a solid(all be it over paid) D-man. It would work out to J-bow for Eller and a 1st. I can't see the Habs signing Markov next year so they fill that hole and the Flames get Eller+a 1st. Flames gain 5 million in cap space for probably our 3rd best guy on the back end right now.

Other than that pick, what would any of these players actually add to the Flames? Moen, nope we don't have a ton of guys that play the same style game. Hamrlik is decent, but Bouwmeester is hands down the better player, adding Spacek doesn't give us anything.

the only thingn they would add is an additional $3 million or so in salary

Bouwmeester is so undervalued by flames fans it ridiculous, What exactly are we going to use that 5 million cap space for?

If you want a big name free agent...guess what you will have to overpay to land them(Sound Familiar?). thats the way it works nowadays. They will instantly become the next scapegoat.

Who has played better than Bouwmeester on our backend this year?

I tell you one thing it's not Giordano, who since signing his contract has struggled defensively.

You could argue Regehr, but he doesnt play the types of minutes bouw does and does not have the capability do to so either.

No thanks.

Not interested in trading Bouwmeester. Not unless there was a young franchise player coming back in that deal.

Bouwmeester has great skills for 4.5-5 million a year, not at 7 million. If the Flames can get a UFA salery dump, a good prospect and a 1st they should take it and run. With his numbers the last two years, he wouldn't bring in a franchise player at 5 million let alone 7 million. Just seems like the franchise could make better use of that cap hit.

Maybe if JayBo was completely useless but he hasn't been all that bad for us. Not what we were hoping for, but certainly somebody with valuable skills that we should keep in this deal.

How about instead of trading our 27 year old, 24 minute per night defenseman for a pick, prospect and salary dump, we let the (10-3-3 in their 16 games) Flames continue to push for a playoff spot?

Hamrlik and Spacek are our most minutes spenders and play against the top 2 opponents lines.....We are doing very well defensively and both are instrumental to that end...

Hamr is UFA this summer and his contract can be easily renewed at $3M or less, Spacek summer 2012. Both can play another 2 to 4 years and can offer the mentorship to your newcomers....

Moen is gritty player that can also offer good hockey on a third line for another 2 years...
All 3 could help you make the playoff$$$ and once in there who knows.....

Flames should jump on it. Eller and 1st should help with the rebuild. The 6M+ saved can be spent on a legit 1st line center.

JayB cost more than he is worth and is a certified loser (look up his playoff record )

I doubt Montreal would go for it.

No man....Flames dont need any of those guys....Eller +1st sound fair

Throw in Hamrlik if you want to get rid of salary but there is no interest in Spacek. The Flames have plenty of Moens in the organization

yeah he is not bad but a legit prospect and a 1st sound good to me...especially when you can get rid of one Sutter's stupid signings.

Sure if it was only for a top prospect and 1st round pick, I'd probably go for it too. The only stupid part of this signing by Sutter was the amount of money paid. If Sutter didn't pull the trigger for that deal, JayBo would have gotten the same amount elsewhere.

If Darryl Sutter hadn't signed him, you can bet there would have been another GM who would have been "stupid" to sign him for just as much if not more. I give Darryl Sutter credit for being aggressive in pursuing the most sought-after UFA available that year. He wanted to upgrade the defense and signing Bouwmeester did that. Yeah he's overpaid by about $1.5M due to the fact that his offensive numbers haven't been as great as they were in Florida, but when you consider that he's great defensively, is only 27 and is a workhorse on that blueline, I can't say I'm concerned.

I guess that's true. Sutter would have looked like a genius if he signed JayB to replace Phaneuf AND traded Phaneuf for some real talent. Instead he traded Phaneuf for chumps that cost the team even more.
