I could just be nitpicking, though.
Most PPs play the defensemen / point men on their off wing side because it provides better shooting angles/lanes, opens up the one-timer and offers less of a chance that if you miss short side, the puck rings and goes out of the zone on the opposite side before your partner can hold it in. They will go with Bieksa and either Hamhuis or Ballard on the 2nd unit for the same reason - both will play their off side.

If you wanted Salo back in before the playoffs, then something would have had to be done.

Injury to Edler clearly changes that equation.
He could have just sat on LTIR until the playoffs and nothing would have happened.

Did anyone else see the Oilers fan on the main board who thinks that this is cap circumvention and we should be suspended?

Samuelsson is a right hand shot which compliments that point so I guess it's our best match for now.
Samuelsson has played a lot better the last two games. Hopefully some added responsibility will have him back in last year's form.

Why on earth would they have waived Ballard when they could just leave Salo on the LTIR until the play-offs?

Yes, but knowing our history with the D-corps being decimated when it really matters, cutting away at that depth would've not been a good move at all, especially knowing what we know now.

Like i said "if" they wanted to bring Salo back before the playoffs.

Also there my be a problem with the League leaving Salo on the LITR if it was seen as an attempt to get around the cap.

Moreover, might have been some concern about getting Salo into some game action before throwing him into the playoffs.

Obviously you would only consider moving someone out at point where you were wanting to get Salo back in. Certainly no one suggested they move out a player if there was some doubt about whether Salo was ready.

The only thing being discussed were the options if you wanted to get Salo back in the lineup. If you did then some move would have to be made. Soon as the injury occurred then that changed the discussion. Prior to that it was totally appropriate to consider what moves would have to be made to get Salo back in.

Gillis said he had a plan for getting Salo into the lineup before Edlers injury, and anyone who thinks his plan included waiving/trading the dman he sent 2 1sts for last offseason is high.

Word is that Rome is almost ready to go and will get Edler's minutes when he is so that Ballard doesn't have to play beyond his means.

If Edler is out until the playoffs then he won't even have to do that.

This still could be be a disaster for the Nucks. Even if he is back by POs, what guarantee is there that he'll be 100 percent? After that kind of surgery?

There was basically no chance they would waive Ballard so I don't see how it was an appropriate discussion.

He's an extremely smart player, his play is very cerebral and positional. No matter how many surgeries he goes through, he won't lose that element to his game.

I'm interested to see how the masses react to more Ballard. I think his play recently has been overstated. His mistakes haven't cost us but they've been glaring at times. He seems to lack offensive instincts and is prone to getting caught up in the nuetral zone. He's got the tools, maybe some icetime will allow him to put it together.

Agreed, that argument was preposterous at best.

Pretty safe bet that we'll finish the season with the same guys we have on the roster right now. Edler can go to for a conditioning stint if need be for a few games in Winnipeg, before the playoffs - that will keep him off the cap I believe, allowing us to keep the two KBs, Ehrhoff, Hamhuis, Salo, Alberts, Rome..

Assuming Edler stays on LTIR, are we able to add any salary? It would be great to add one more secondary scoring threat, like a Stillman type or someone. The second PP unit is a joke.

Dr Dvorak just sounds creepy, like from an old vampire movie or something.

respect his privacy? Its not like he wants to know what he had for dinner last night or who he's voting for in the next Swedish election. Maybe a press release as to if the surgery was successful or if they may have found more significant damage. Its not likely to happen this early but...lighten up Francis.

The Vancouver Canucks say defenceman Alexander Edler underwent successful back surgery Monday, but that they will know more about his prognosis in the next few days.

The Canucks were told that Edler would require 10-12 weeks to recover post-surgery, a timeline that bumps up against the end of the NHLís regular season on April 10. Edler was suffering from a herniated disc in his lower back, which was not going to heal without surgery.

That was Pre-Op on how long it usually takes but there are 12 weeks left in the regular season so this fits perfectly.
