We have our quota filled at center with Gomez and Pleks as the top-6 guys and Halpern/Eller on the 3rd & 4th lines. If Arnott played wing productively it would be an option.

Don't understand this. We can't afford him and we don't need more centermen. We need performance on the wing and a rental D-man.

EDIT: Unless you were thinking about something where Gomez goes back to the Swamp, and I think Montreal would have to give up a ton for that, seeing as NJD has Parise to sign this offseason.

He brings leadership and size.
He fills the need of a big, physical forward and since it would take a lot to get Penner he could be the next best thing. But he has to play wing.

Sounds great except for the fact that he's a... (wait for it)... centerman!

This is another of what I would consider "luxury" options for the Habs. A nice stay-at-home d-man, or any forward with size and some talent... all of that is "nice-to-have". But the Habs still don't have an overflowing farm system, and they aren't considered major contenders. So there are limits to what the Habs should be willing to pay for these kind of luxury rentals. Arnott has played wing before in his career, and that's where he'd go with the Habs.

Per the Phillips thread, I'd like to stick at "3rd Rounder + surplus decent prospect" from the Habs (i.e. Carle if it was D, Maxwell up Front). I have to think that for any truly attractive players on the market, this would not be remotely close to the best bid. But in the off chance that it was, it's better than nothing for the seller. Well, and better than a truly insultingly low better-than-nothing offer like a 7th round pick. But not the kind of offer that I expect gets me the player.

Is leadership what we're looking for? Granted, all of our rookies never seem to develop properly but it's not like we were sprouting diamonds when Koivu, the GREATEST MAN TO EVER WEAR THE C, was here. I'd say management is the problem here, not the locker room.

And besides which, this team is a lot more capable of being physical than we were last year against Philly already. I know that people have been saying that we need size on our team; and if we were sending a centerman of equal value back, I would not even be opposed; but I don't think size and leadership are priorities compared to some extra goalscoring or defense for the playoff push. (Since, as we all know, Gill will turn on the charcoal for the playoffs and not allow a shot on Price.)

Habs needs: Big stay at home d-man (Phillips / C.White) or big power forward winger (Penner) or maybe a gritty 2-way winger

Habs non-needs: Centermen, goaltenders or small forwards of any kind.

He can play wing or centre, but his natural position is centre.

As someone mentioned previously, a player like Arnott would be a luxury but not a necessity. If we traded for Arnott (without returning equal salary) it would hurt our team moving forward IMO. A Chris Phillips / Colin White type of d-man would have a much greater impact than Arnott trying to play wing.
